Bucky Covington, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney: The Country Charts Are Rockin’

When Gregg Allman showed up Tuesday with Tim McGraw on “The Jay Leno Show,” it was a bit of an event, though maybe not quite as unusual an event as it would have been in years gone by.

Gregg was an appropriate musical partner — after all, Tim’s current single “Southern Voice,” which he performed on “Leno,” namechecks the Allman Brothers along with Tom Petty and Chuck Berry.

But Gregg’s hardly the only pop star or rocker with an attachment to country these days. The Zac Brown Band’s “Toes” is co-written with singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins, who referred to Los Angeles as “Nashville with a tan” in his 1998 pop hit “Lullaby.” Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova” counts Mike Elizondo, who’s worked with Maroon 5 and Snoop Dogg, among its writers. Brooks & Dunn’s “Honky Tonk Stomp” gets a signature vocal stamp from ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons. Jimmy Wayne enlisted Daryl Hall & John Oates to back him on his remake of “Sara Smile.” And Darius Rucker came to country music after first establishing himself in Hootie + The Blowfish.

Toby Keith, Jimmy Wayne Lead Concert News

Toby Keith will top 1 million ticket sales,  Jimmy Wayne had an onstage drop-in from a legendary pop artist, and Kenny Chesney had the summer’s top tour.

In addition to the weekend’s previously reported mass of ticket sales for the new Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift dates, there’s still plenty of country concert news to skim.

What’s up on the road:

  • When Toby Keith concludes his current America’s Toughest Tour, he will have sold a whopping 1 million concert tickets for the year. It is, he says, the ninth time he’s reached that mark.
  • When Jimmy Wayne appeared in Baltimore last week on Brad Paisley’s American Saturday Night Tour, he had a surprise guest join him onstage. John Oates, of the pop duo Hall & Oates, helped out on Jimmy’s performance of “Sara Smile,” a 1976 H2O hit that Jimmy’s re-recorded as his current single. Brad’s tour, which also featured Dierks Bentley, came to a close over the weekend. Miranda Lambert and Justin Moore take over Dierks’ and Jimmy’s slots when Brad goes back out in January.

Toby Keith Has The Write Attitude

Toby Keith’s new American Ride album is debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

But while the public thinks of Toby as a recording artist and entertainer, he’s also quite successful as a songwriter. In fact, on Sunday the Nashville Songwriters Association International will recognize him as the Songwriter/Artist of the Decade, and that honor is forefront in his mind at the moment.

Toby Keith on Quite the Ride

Toby Keith’s Jib Jab-style video for “American Ride” has earned an enormous amount of attention, but the song was already making a statement for itself before the singer ever got the clip out to the public. The video certainly didn’t hurt Toby as the single hit No. 1 on both the Billboard and Country Aircheck singles charts.

Whether he’s dogging record executives, politicians or music critics, Toby’s never been one to hold back on his opinions. “Ride” bundles a bunch of issues — illegal immigration, global warming, religion and the price of gas among them — in four short verses and a chorus.

Toby didn’t write the song, but he was instantly interested when he heard its swipe at the news media.

“It’s not really news anymore,” Toby told The Oklahoman. Continue Reading

    Dierks Bentley Keeps His Perspective

Sept. 30, 2009 — Dierks Bentley was the only country artist on the list this summer when Forbes magazine named 10 people most likely to break from stardom into superstardom. But if he’s ever tempted to take himself too seriously, he needs only look to his past to keep his feet on the ground.

Dierks took a lot of odd jobs to finance his life before he found his way in the music business, and one of those required him to clean 250-gallon septic tanks on houseboats at Lake Powell in Arizona.

“[One day] I was working these levers and suddenly the guys I was working with jumped back in horror,” he told The Orange County Register. “I had done it wrong, and the waste was just shooting out all over everything. Continue Reading

When it came time to find a producer for his next single, Jimmy Wayne’s label president, Scott Borchetta, knew just who to call — hit maker Dann Huff. Dann’s worked with some of country’s biggest stars, including Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Rascal Flatts and many others.

“I chose Dann Huff to produce ‘Sara Smile’ because I’ve paid close attention to Dann’s work over the past ten years and I’ve met him several times,” says Jimmy. “Each time he was genuinely nice and humble. I felt that I have the song that’s been my shield and my sword since the beginning of my career and the most incredible record label, mirrored by the image of Scott Borchetta, so why not have the best producer out there! It was like magic when Scott called me and suggested, ‘We should ask Dann Huff to produce ‘Sara Smile’.’ There was a million pounds lifted off of me instantly.” Continue Reading

Blake Shelton is double trouble on GAC in the coming week as he guests on Friday’s Top 20 Country Countdown and receives his own installment of Backstory: Blake Shelton on Tuesday.

Girlfriend Miranda Lambert joins friends, family and business associates to reflect in Backstory on Blake, whose performance of Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock & Roll” at age 12 makes its way into the special. It was doing that number that convinced Blake to pursue music full-time.

“Right then is when he got the bug and thought, ‘Man, I want to do this,’” his mom says. Continue Reading

    Dierks Bentley Emphasizes Customer Service

In the years before he got married, Dierks Bentley usually maintained the busiest road schedule of any country hitmaker. He did plenty of partying, but he also made a personal connection with his fan base, and that’s one of the most important elements of his career.

“Everything we do revolves around the road and playing live shows and being in front of people, and that’s why we’re out so much on the road,” he told the national radio show GAC Nights: Live From Nashville. Continue Reading
