“Carrie Underwood” Goes Missing

Given the success Carrie Underwood is enjoying with her remake of Randy Travis’ “I Told You So,” she might want to consider a cover of Ferlin Husky’s “Gone” as she records her third album. It would be appropriate: The sign that once welcomed visitors to the “Home of Carrie Underwood” is gone from the city limits.

Four signs recognizing her local connection were posted along Interstate 40 and U.S. 69 in Checotah, Okla., in August 2005, just months after Carrie won American Idol. But, according to The Oklahoman, each of the green markers was taken down.

Rejected by her hometown? Not at all. As it turns out, the signs were given to Checotah by Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry, but the state’s Department of Transportation code does not allow them to remain on state property longer than two years. Once they came down, the state gave the prideful plaques to Checotah. It’s possible they could be erected again, but they would have to be posted on city property.

The city of Nashville will be Carrie’s focus in the near future. She’s currently working on her third album, and she plans to sign autographs during the CMA Music Festival June 11-14. Among other artists who’ll pen their names for fans during the festival: Taylor Swift, Reba McEntire, Gretchen Wilson and the Lost Trailers.
