Oct. 1, 2009 — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and GAC contributes to the cause with a re-airing Saturday of Ultimate Garth: The Ultimate Hits.

The one-hour special features Garth’s observations about the music and videos that appeared on his Ultimate Hits compilation, which was issued in a special pink edition that raised money for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Ultimate Garth will also offer information on the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Ultimate Garth airs at 4 p.m. ET Saturday. Other country acts taking part in events on behalf of breast cancer include:

  •  Carrie Underwood flips the switch Friday as the Grand Ole Opry goes pink. The radio show’s signature red barn will be bathed in pink as it honors Women Rock for the Cure and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Others in the lineup for the night include Terri Clark, Jo Dee Messina, Lorrie Morgan and Mindy Smith. “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts — a breast cancer survivor — will be a guest announcer.
  • Mindy headlines the Women Rock for the Cure benefit concert in Nashville Thursday night at 3rd & Lindsley. GAC’s Storme Warren hosts the show, which also features Caitlin Lynn, of Caitlin & Will; Veronica Ballestrini; and Coldwater Jane. The cause is personal for Mindy, whose mother died from breast cancer when the singer was 19 years old.
  • Lee Ann Womack speaks and performs Thursday at a Pink Ribbon Luncheon in Cincinnati. “Knock on wood, I’m healthy,” she told The Cincinnati Enquirer, “but not everybody is all the time, so just anything you can do to help out is so important.”
  • Rocker Melissa Etheridge performed in a pink Delta jet Tuesday night for an audience of fellow breast-cancer survivors, according to USA Today. While she’s not a country artist, Melissa certainly appreciates the genre. She authored a Trisha Yearwood single, “You Can Sleep While I Drive.” And she’s set to appear Thursday in Los Angeles in an All for the Hall fundraiser for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Also on the bill: Vince Gill, Dwight Yoakam and Emmylou Harris.
