Keith Urban or Homework?

Keith Urban on stage at his "All For The Hall" benefit concert at the Sommet Center in Nashville, TN on October 13, 2009

Isn’t the internet great!  Tonight I was faced with a dilemma.  Three school age children with soccer practice and mountains of homework OR Keith Urban doing a one-of-a-kind concert in downtown Nashville with special guests Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, Little Big Town, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Faith Hill, and Taylor Swift.  A concert Keith set up to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Of course my kids come first, but then I get a last minute email that the concert is going to be streamed live online.  Thank you Al Gore!  So tonight, a concert was broadcast live on a laptop from my kitchen counter while I tried to remember long division, sorted out some story problems and ran a mock spelling test.   I even signed off on two permissions slips for field trips and emptied the dishwasher! All the while I was able to post updates about the show on Twitter and upload snapshots to a photo gallery on Facebook.

Watching the concert online was good, not great.  Nothing can replace the experience of being in the crowd and seeing a show like that live.  But you take what you can get.  And without the live stream, I would have never had the chance to see Keith and Brad duke it out with their guitars on “Start A Band.”  Or witness Faith Hill sing “Take Another Little Piece of My Heart” with backup vocals by Vince and Keith.  Both Keith and Vince stayed onstage throughout to play along with all of the featured guests on their respective hits.  The grand finale was worth the wait, as the entire lineup of stars took the stage together to perform “Lay Down Sally.”  There were a ton of other incredible moments and collaborations throughout the night.

I’m glad I got to be there, sort of, and take part in the experience from afar.  But more importantly, I hope my youngest son can remember how to spell “mosquito” on his test tomorrow and my daughter can get the correct answer to 408 divided by 8.

Did you go to the show in person or happen to watch it online too?  Either way, leave me a comment and let me know what your favorite moments of the night were.

  2. I was one of the lucky ones to be there Tuesday night!!! All I can say is that I second EVERYTHING that everyone wrote! It was a night I will always remember.
Got to say my favorite part of the night (and that is a hard moment to discern) was when Keith sang "Coat of Many Colors". I just love to hear that voice, no matter what he sings!

  3. I too was there. Drove up from St. Louis and it was the best concert. Where else could you see so many talented performers. Keith was amazing as always. My seats were on the side of the stage and below me all the stars waited to go on. Faith Hill looked up at me and let me take her picture. I saw Jason Aldean sitting with his children . It was sweet. It was almost like being backstage. The best suprised was seeing Nicole Kidman come up to sit in a special hideout they have for her by the side of the stage to watch her husband and seeing her shaking her head to all his songs . So cute Loved it . Hope i can go next year.

  4. Wow!! This show was incredible! The entire night was something that I am proud to say "I Was There" !! Even with (what seemed very long) setup for the band, the night could not have been more exciting!!! I've been to many concerts (including two Fan Fairs) and I can say, I've never been more exhausted after a concert! These gals and guys on stage absolutely nailed it!!
With Fans and Artists like this, I am proud to Say I LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC!!!

  5. I was there and just have to say it was hands down the best concert I've ever seen. Attending a Keith concert is comparable to a party where the host makes you feel so darned comfortable and welcome. As someone above mentioned, the enthusiasm and energy is unbelievable and Keith was like a beaming dad with every act. If they'd continued on later believe the house would have still have been full – Tuesday or not! Thanks to everyone for an unforgetable evening.

  7. Thank You Keith and Vince. It was an awesome show! I am so grateful that I was able to watch it on-line. I loved the whole show. Keith is so generous in so many ways. He did not have to be in the spotlight, he was perfectly happy to let everyone else shine. I could see that Keith was very happy, and I think for me, that was the highlight of the night. All the performers were fantastic!

  8. What can I add. Nothing left to be said, EXCEPT

THANK YOU KEITH URBAN AND VINCE GILL!

The live stream was wonderful. I didn't have any freeze ups or delays. Wonderful idea and whoever gave us that gift….THANK YOU too.

Keith your amazing talent was the highlight of the night! Your generous heart just showed all night long and your wonderful smiles added a not to be forgotten concert!

  10. I was also there and IT ROCKED!!!! I am so grateful Keith and Vince put this show on because not only did I get to see a number of AMAZING country artists rock out to their songs but support the Country Music Hall of Fame. It was a gigantic line-up and I am so glad I did not miss it!!!!

  11. What an absolutely fabulous night filled with great music and great talent. Keith shined as usual, the man had a smile on his face through the 3 1/2 hour set, Great back up singer and musician for the talented lineup that Vince and him had scheduled.

My favorite moments were Keith singing "Coat of Many Colors", "Stupid Boy", and "Til Summer Comes Around". Just magic.

Other favs were Keith & Brad singing "Start a Band". AWESOME duet & guitar dueling.

Vince Gill, Dan Huff & Keith Urban playing in a band together. Outstanding

Lady A was very impressive. Great harmony

Faith Hill…………..what pipes this woman has.

Would love to be able to attend it in person next year.

Thank you Keith & Vince for an incredible night with you and your "friends"

  12. It was a joy to witness such a wonderful event. Really…when are we going to be able to experience that line up again? I wish I'd been there live … but appreciate the live stream so much.

Keith Urban is really a phenomenal performer. The highlight for me was Keith's duet / duel with Brad Paisley. What a pair of truly talented musicians!

Everyone did a great job. I watched the live stream … couldn't be in Nashville. I loved that it was available to watch on line, but to be there would have been so exciting. I appreciate Taylor's young talent, but to see Faith Hill out there was a thrill for me! She is a class act not to mention a wonderful singer.

Vince Gill's dedication to the genre is admirable and I'm impressed at how Keith Urban has embraced the history of country music and taken the lead in this endeavor. They each deserve a medal for organizing this event and putting their hearts into it! Thank you all!

  13. The concert was GREAT!!!!!. Live stream was beautiful,I could not be there in person but if you have been to a Keith Urban Concert you know the energy and you can feel it in your own Living Room. All the artists were great, could listen to Faith Hill all night. She has an unbelievable voice. Watching Keith and Vince Gill in the house band unbelievable. Brad and Keith AMAZING and when ever you can hear or watch Til Summer Comes Around it's heaven .L SERRA

  14. The seemingly tireless energy Keith Urban put into the Hall of Fame Benefit Concert even after his shortened version of his own concert in the beginning of the Concert was so sweet to watch!!! Vince Gill didn’t perform quite as long as Keith Urban but I think he perfomed great as he always does. Lady A. perfomed just as good in person as they did on their new and old videos as well……It’s not too often I hear someone say ” I feel exceptional well this evening” as Keith Urban did. I greet alot of people on my job and most respond “ok”, “alright”, “good” when asked “how are you “? Wished Brad could’ve performed one more song. I enjoyed every moment of the Country Hall of Fame Benefit Concert.

  15. Highlight of the night was when Keith sang "Coat of Many Colors"; not only a tribute to Hall of Famers, but he picked Dolly's song (a lady song, not by a guy) is just so sweet. Next year, they could do one original and one cover song something like that and we can hear new interpretation of these songs. They'll have more time to prepare if they want to go that way. This year, I have no clue what they were expecting but it turned out GREAT.

  16. We all need better internet server and faster speed for livestream programs (upgrade it before next year's concert October 10, 2010). This is the first time I've ever watched event like this online. With all the great camera shots and quality of it was way more than what I was expecting. The sound quality is also much better than what we usually hear on the TV. May be it's all computer software.

I have to give great kudos to Keith for putting in so much of his time into this. Not throwing money; but put in his effort and labor for this great cause. Also kudos to Vince and his band. They set a very high standard how to do a benefit concert. I thought intermission was too long and later realized that Keith had to rest up a bit because he's coming back for the whole set. The way he played the backup guitar and vocals also put new twists to other's songs.

Thanks live streaming. It's not homework. Going to bed late and late for work this a.m. for me.

    • Next year's concert is actually scheduled for October 5, 2010.

  17. I attended last night…one word AMAZING! I have never been a part of such an electric, energy-filled night in my entire life! Thanks, Keith! You, Vince, and all the others literally brought the house down. It has been a lifelong dream to see Vince & Keith play together…now I can check that one off of my bucket list! Keith & Brad's dueling guitars on Start A Band blew the roof off the arena!! So much talent in one place…can't wait until next October!!!

  18. I was at the show last night.. It was by far the best concert I have ever been to.. The line-up of artists was just amazing.. You never knew what to expect.. The crowd was just insane. My seats were on the floor. It was an honor to be part of such an amazing show benefiting the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.. I even made it on the big screen so if you were watching online im sure you saw me.. lol… All in all it was one amazing show.. My favorite part had to be when Keith and Brad duked it out from each side of the arena. Brad was on the right and Keith on the left.. Amazing..

Lisa Giese on October 14, 2009 at 1:43 pm
    • Lisa — I was 3 rows behind Brad while he and Keith "duked it out"… Absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!!

  20. I absolutely loved the fact that this was streamed live! Keith, what can I say except AMAZING performer, entertainer, musicain, person…. he's the whole shebang!!!! All of the artists sounded good and put on a GREAT show, Vince Gill totally awssome and so funny to boot:)

  21. This show was just out of this world great and I'm so amazed at Keith Urban's talents!! Thank God for the internet! It was just a wonderful show and I'm so glad I got to view it in my own home!!! WOW!! Looking forward to next year Keith!! Only one little thing, I found out how Taylor sings….her backup girls…I could hear them much better than I could Taylor. I'm sorry, she's cute and sweet and young people love her, but country music, she's not!

  23. Forgot to mention, that I also think a DVD would be great. More money for the hall and I would be one of the first to purchase several copies. One for me and others as gifts. I love to give the gift of music .

  24. I also watched on line, as I am in Texas and have to work today. It cost me a very short night's sleep, but was so worth it. Keith Urban is just so amazing. The voice is absolutely beautiful. Clean, clear and distinctive, Guitar skills leaves me speechless, and as Vince Gill said, the Heart of a Musician. He also has a heart for his fans, his audience's and a heart for his adobted country. All the acts were good with the excetion of one or two. I personally just can't get into Swift, her voice to me is just not that good and her music just to young. I know tweens and teens all love her and want to be her, I have those age grandaughters, creating hugh sales numbers, but I admire real tried and true talent. Female singers don't come with a more beautiful voice than Faith Hill!! The others were really good, although I just couldn't help but think how hard it seemed for some to have that same enthusiasm that just pours out of Keith Urban when he is live and performing his music. The man is a marvel. I loved seeing him play along side Vince gill for all of the other acts, and sing back-up. I'll say it one more time, AMAZING!!

  25. I absolutely LOVED tonight's live stream!! How someone can be that gorgeous and talented is mystifying. I had our family netbook with me while at my desk working, OK, and yes, tweeting, with me doing laundry, with me unloading and reloading the dishwasher, and with me when I went in to listen to a paper my daughter was working on for one of her college classes. It was awesome!! (her paper and the concert) Feed broke up a little at the beginning of LBT. Not sure if it was the stream or the little netbook. Pause between Keith and Vince's sets was a bit too long. But still, it was great being almost there while in Washington State doing my SSDD routine!

  27. I really enjoyed Keith's part of the concert and of course Brad and Keith. I got tired ot the all the pauses during the live stream. It kinda ruined most of Keith, Vince's, Brad, Little Big Town and Lady A, It was the worse during Keith's and Brad's performance. This happen's everytime I've seen a steam of Keith's concert. I really enjoyed all the concert w. the exception of Jason Aldean not a fan. Thought Taylor was good as usual. Keith did a wonderful job. Even though the pauses in the steam were very annoying I really was happy to see the concert. Keith did a wonderful job putting together a great show.w. help from Vince. I was happy to see Keith on stage through out the entire show.

  28. Missed out on the whole she-bang because of class and then a meeting for a club I'm in. Sounds like it was fantastic!

Wish they'd put it up on the internet as a watch when you want video as well (on something like Hulu.com or maybe even release it as DVD with proceeds going to the Hall) for those of us who could not get out other events. But I'm pretty sure that won't happen.

Jennifer on October 14, 2009 at 7:10 am
    • I like that idea. I think they should make a dvd or put it on itunes and donate the profits to the Hall!

  29. So many highlights. Keith's guitar solos on Stupid Boy and Till Summer Comes Around. His beautiful rendition of Coat of Many Colors. The tear down the roof Start a Band from Brad and Keith. Stunning harmonies from Little Big Town and Lady A. Jason Aldean belting out She's Country and Faith Hill's incredible soaring voice. Kudos to Vince and Keith for putting this highlight filled concert together.

Katy on October 14, 2009 at 6:10 am
  30. Start a Band had to be the highlight. I think that may be only the 2nd time they've performed that live….the first being the CMA or ACM awards last year…can't remember which. What a great cause. Keith Urban is a great man
