Three people at No. 1, two of them also poised at No. 3. These are very good days for Lady Antebellum, not even a week after the trio claimed a pair of Country Music Association awards.
The band slid into the top spot this week on the USA Today Mediabase country singles chart with “Need You Now.” If that’s not enough, their performance of the song on the CMA telecast helped the single reach No. 1 on the all-genre iTunes sales list.
“We have been on clouds nine, 10, 11 and 12 all week,” group member Hillary Scott says. “As songwriters, we really couldn’t be more proud. We are just putting our stories and emotions in these songs and to know that other people have these same feelings is so amazing and wonderful and validating — not just on an artistic level, but also on a human level. We feel so much love from the country music community and other artists and country radio and the fans. I get emotional even talking about it now.”
Her bandmates, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, are riding high, too. In addition to “Need You Now,” they’re co-writers on Luke Bryan’s “Do I,” which edged up to No. 3 on the USA Today chart. The idea for that song was all Luke’s, but he’s the first to say the Lady A guys made a huge difference.
“It was pretty amazing to watch it come together,” he told The Tennessean. “When the three of us started working on it, it took on a whole new meaning. It’s a lot of fun to have success with two good guys like Charles and Dave.”
The band will have a nice No. 2 slot in 2010. They kick off a run as the opening act for Tim McGraw’s Southern Voice Tour in Omaha on Feb. 11.
