Taylor Swift gives her acceptance speech live from London via satellite during the 2009 American Music Awards help on November 22 broadcast live on ABC from the NOKIA Theatre in L.A.
At the end of last year, Taylor Swift hosted GAC’s countdown of the Top 50 songs of 2008. Little did she know in January that she would dominate the year ahead of her.
But as 2009 comes to a close, it’s clear that she’s been the biggest thing in music — and not just country music, which she still calls home. Billboard has named her Artist of the Year, ahead of Kanye West, Beyonce, Coldplay and everybody else. That honor comes just weeks after she earned Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards and a month after the Country Music Association handed her Entertainer of the Year.
And that particular moment is the one that still has her floored.
“That was the most mind-blowing experience, hearing my name called and winning that award,” Taylor told Billboard. “That is an award I had placed in an unattainable spot in my head. To be the youngest to win it makes me love country music even more for being so open-minded.”
Taylor, who turns 20 on Sunday, also grabbed Album of the Year at the CMAs for Fearless. But she’s been writing songs as she moved through her tour this year, and she sounds like someone with her eyes on the next project.
“I’m well into writing my next album,” she said. “I think my biggest goal for this next record is to write in real time as I always have. I want to continue to write about things that I’m going through. My first record was my diary from my early teens. My next was my diary from 16 to 18. My biggest hope for this next record is that the feelings I’m feeling right now will be accurately portrayed.”
As she works on the next one, the last one continues to pay dividends. Taylor’s an eight-time nominee for the Grammy Awards, slated to be presented Jan. 31. Fearless is up for the all-genre Album of the Year honor, a category that also boasts Beyonce, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and the Dave Matthews Band.
And she’s likely to appear somewhere among GAC’s 50 Top Videos Of 2009. Martina McBride hosts this year’s edition, beginning Dec. 28 at 8 p.m. ET.
