Carrie Underwood might have tripped on her way to the stage at Wednesday’s People’s Choice Awards, but she succeeded in taking home the trophy once she got to the podium.

“That just shows you,” she said after stumbling, “how excited I am!”

Carrie was one of three country stars to join the winner’s circle during the show, aired live on CBS from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Keith Urban walked off with Favorite Male Artist, and Taylor Swift collected Favorite Female.

“It was obviously a very great 2009 for me, and of course that was because of the fans,” Carrie observed. “So thank you guys so muchfor voting. It’s gonna be an even better 2010.”

As she did at the MTV Awards, Taylor beat Beyonce to claim her victory, though Kanye West was not on hand to protest. Pink, Britney Spears and Carrie likewise took a back seat to Taylor as she took her first People’s Choice Award.

“What a beautiful, beautiful way to start out a new decade,” said Taylor, who is a finalist for eight different trophies in the Grammy Awards Jan. 31. “Thank you so much.”

Unlike most awards shows, the People’s Choice is determined by a vote of consumers, and they were understandably a major part of most acceptance speeches.

“I wanna thank the fans,” Taylor gushed. “You’re the ones who choose which songs on the radio you wanna turn up and blast from your car speakers, and you’re the ones who choose which concerts you wanna see.”

In addition to choosing Taylor, fans also tabbed Keith ahead of four males from several genres: John Mayer, Eminem, Jason Mraz and Tim McGraw. Keith kissed wife Nicole Kidman on his way to the stage and recognized her and daughter Sunday Rose Urban in his acceptance speech. He likewise thanked fans for coming out to his 2009 tour and for finding his songs in stores and online.

“I don’t care,” he insisted, “if you downloaded it illegally.”

Rascal Flatts also appeared as presenters on the show, which also saw awards go to Ellen DeGeneres, Ashton Kutcher, Steve Carell, Taylor Lautner and Sandra Bullock, among others.

  16. COUNTRY FANS voted for Carrie—-and she won. Most country fans are tired of hearing about Swift–and know she is not a country artist–and she remixes her songs for pop.——–and she just can not carry a tune at all. So overrated—and overexposed that we are tired of her. Congrats Carrie and Keith.

    musician12 on January 8, 2010 at 1:31 pm
  17. I think the real talent won in the country category also. Taylor is cute in her own way, however, Taylor cannot carry her tunes. I recently spoke with a backup singer in the nashville area and she completely agreed. She said Taylor could write songs, so she thought, but sing. "She needs to stay with what she does best" I believe was her exact comment. Keith Urban – what can you say. FABULOUS and so deserving. But Carrie – now there is true talent, with a humble and truly grateful personality. I wish all the best this year and hope she has a lovely wedding.

  19. By the way, since there were three country stars that won the awards don't you think there should be a picture of each of these stars on this article….would have been nice to see Keith with his trophy…..just saying!

  20. Congrats to Keith for finally winning a People's Choice Award, an award that was well deserved! Keith is such a talented singer/songwriter and a GREAT entertainer and I am so happy that the "people" gave the Male Artist award to such a deserving artist. I love that Keith is so humble and genuine in his love for his fans and love of music. What a great speech and he looked great too! Loved seeing him and Nicole together and loved that he and Carrie greeted each other when she won although it's too bad he did not win that award also since he has been making country music for over a decade now and is still going strong! But congrats to Carrie for that one and there is always the Grammys….good luck Keith!

  21. Way to go Carrie!! Always great when the most talented and deserving people win. Also very happy for Keith, it was between either him or Brad.

  25. Congratulations Carrie and Keith. Carrie won the COUNTRY award over Swift. REAL TALENT WON in this catagory. Swift is so overexposed and overrated that it has made me not like her at all—-plus the fact that she can not sing worth crap.

  30. Paul- That is a funny comment you made on Carrie not winning awards unless fans vote for her. Look at all of her CMA, ACM (EXCLUDING EOTY) awards. Along with AMA'S, Billboards, ect. they are not all fan voted. Carrie is awesome shut your trap.

    Thanks

Callie on January 7, 2010 at 10:49 pm
    • Here Here Callie. Totally AGREE!!!!!!!!!!! CARRIE IS AWESOME

  31. Carrie can't win any award unless her fans can vote on it

Paul on January 7, 2010 at 10:27 pm
    • What's the matter – jealous?????? No one has to defend Carrie because her record stands by itself AND WHAT A RECORD. Fan based nominations – I don't think so – what did Callie say "Shut Your Trap"

Dawn on January 8, 2010 at 8:01 am
  32. i am glad all of them won. by the way they all deserve it. the only thing that worry's me is Taylor weight. Also the fact she choose that dress. It was pretty and she look stunning. The only thing is it also looks like just a towel and my little sister looks up to her and wants to do and wear everything Taylor does. So i do think maybe she should have pick something that cover her up a little more.

awesome on January 7, 2010 at 10:26 pm

carrie has a voice and ts is auto tuned

  37. It's no surprise that Taylor's pop fans didn't vote for her in the country category. They know Taylor's a pop singer and not a country singer!

CarlonMusicRow on January 7, 2010 at 9:23 pm
    • Yeah – becuase most pop singers scream and yell and don't need to carry tunes when they open their mouths – you're right – she fits right in the pop category realllll welllll. However, she's up againt Miley Cyrus and that little girl CAN SING even when she screams you can understand her and she already has one heck of a fan support group with her. Taylor won't last long on top there either.

  43. I wonder why the writer didn’t state who Carrie beat out in her
category when he did for Taylor and Keith.

Dawn on January 7, 2010 at 2:13 pm
  44. Congratulations to Carrie, Keith, and Taylor on their wins. But by NO standards did any of the artists who did not win in any of these categories take a back seat to the one who won! That was really a poor choice of words to use…very negative!

  45. Absolutely awesome for Carrie and Keith to get these wins.

  47. Love Keith and am thrilled that he is FINALLY getting the recognition he deserves. What a pleasant surprise. He is one of the most outstanding guitar players and singer/writers in any genre, along with Brad Paisley. They bring joy to everyone. Carrie has grown up so much since her start in country, but Taylor still needs some growing up to do, she sings o.k. on her videos but live — not so much! Congrats to Keith and Carrie.

  49. I'm so happy for all the winners! I'm glad Carrie got a win, and I was super excited that it was Taylor and Keith, two country singers, who took home the all-genre artist awards. That is just amazing to me.
