Texas and Oklahoma have a looooong history of antagonism, one that’s so strong that in 2007, a man got beat up in Oklahoma City for simply walking into a bar wearing a Longhorns T-shirt.
Into this whole them-versus-us rivalry strolls one Miranda Lambert, who’s taken up residence in Tishomingo, Okla., 200 miles from her hometown of Lindale, Texas. Her farm in the Sooner State has become something of a refuge from the grind of the road, though the border feud gets little more than a shrug from her.
“I think the rivalry is just funny,” she told The Oklahoma Gazette, “because we’re so much alike — the people from where I came from and now where I have my farm. It’s beautiful there. It’s 45 minutes from the [Texas] border, and it’s two hours from any airport. Sometimes it sucks when you have two hours to drive home, but once you get there, it’s worth it!”
Still, the Red River Rivalry has some influence on her life. She lived in the heart of Dallas Cowboys territory. Boyfriend Blake Shelton is a native Oklahoman. Tishomingo might be where she gets her mail, but at least part of her heart is still attached to Lindale. Or, at the very least, one significant person that still lives there.
“For my mother’s sake,” she noted, “I won’t call Oklahoma my home state!”
Miranda visits both sides of the border this week along with Brad Paisley and Justin Moore as the American Saturday Night Tour resumes. They play Thursday in San Antonio and Friday in Oklahoma City.
