One of the most infectious singles of the last year came with Sarah Buxton’s “Outside My Window,” which is bubbling and bopping at No. 23 on the most recent Country Aircheck singles list.
Just as engaging is her video, shot with a digital camera on a whim with co-writers Victoria Shaw, Mark Hudson and Gary Burr for only about $80. Her record company didn’t even know she was shooting it, but its goofy, happy-go-lucky attitude and panorama of colors made it easy for Lyric Street to get it into circulation.
The video has, however, made it more difficult for the competition.
“John Rich texted me,” she told Billboard, “and said, ‘Thanks a lot, Sarah. Now the budget for my next video is only going to be $100.’”
Sarah’s first taste of commercial success came when Keith Urban recorded her song “Stupid Boy.” Her version of it will be included on her self-titled debut album, due Feb. 23. She is, however, partial to Keith’s cover.
“It’s cool when someone else sings your song,” she said. “He totally took it to another planet. But I also want people to hear what that same lyric sounds like from the female perspective.”
She’ll likely be performing both “Stupid Boy” and “Outside My Window” later this year as part of the multi-artist Country Throwdown Tour, featuring Montgomery Gentry, Little Big Town, Jamey Johnson, Jack Ingram, Eric Church and the Eli Young Band, among others. The tour starts May 14 in Tampa and covers some 23 cities before winding up in Mountain View, Calif., June 20.
