Clint Black, John Michael Montgomery Two-Timers on Top 20 Love Songs

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, causing single people to gnash their teeth, men to pony up for flowers and women to get positively squishy about romance.

For kicks, we’ve endeavored to come up with the Top 20 country love songs of all-time, and only two people — Clint Black and John Michael Montgomery — are two-timers on that list. Clint’s “Something That We Do” and “When I Said I Do,” the latter recorded with his wife, Lisa Hartman Black, are well thought-out expressions of the work involved in making a relationship last. John Michael’s “I Swear” and “I Can Love You Like That” lean toward the age-old pop approach of giving love a fairytale stamp. “I Can Love You Like That,” in fact, makes a Cinderella reference; and it’s no coincidence that both songs were simultaneously pop hits at the time John Michael had them on the charts.

The following list is partially subjective but not entirely. It’s mostly a reflection of success on the charts and at awards shows — and in a title’s ability to wear well over time.

Since there are only 20 places here, there were plenty of songs that were considered but didn’t quite make it. And songs about unrequited love or relationships that are essentially over — Willie Nelson’s “Always On My Mind,” Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” George Jones’ “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” to cite a handle of major examples — were tossed.

Feel free to debate it — tell us what you think we missed in the comments section below!

Alan Jackson, “Remember When”
• Anne Murray, “Could I Have This Dance”
Brad Paisley, “Then”
• Clint Black, “Something That We Do”
• Clint Black & Lisa Hartman Black, “When I Said I Do”
Collin Raye, “Love, Me”
Dierks Bentley, “I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes”
Faith Hill, “Breathe”
Garth Brooks, “To Make You Feel My Love”
George Strait, “I Cross My Heart”
• John Michael Montgomery, “I Can Love You Like That”
• John Michael Montgomery, “I Swear”
• Keith Whitley, “When You Say Nothing At All”
Lady Antebellum, “I Run To You”
LeAnn Rimes, “I Need You”
Lonestar, “Amazed”
Martina McBride, “Valentine”
Randy Travis, “Forever And Ever, Amen”
Rascal Flatts, “Bless The Broken Road”

  2. Too many good ones left off. Where is Taylor? Look in her diary and I'm sure she will tell you. She has no love songs, just high school diary songs.

Shania's "From This Moment"? Not to mention Michael Peterson's "From Here To Eternity", that was a great one.

  8. I can't believe KEITH URBAN is not on the list. Who voted, anyway. He got cheated at the CMA and ACM awards also. If it's love songs, Keith should be on the list.

goofette on February 13, 2010 at 6:26 pm
    • Cheated! What about Toby Keith and Jason Aldean? Alot of the really good people are never recognized just the regulars and the pop singers trying to be country by wearing boots. Who votes for these awards?

  13. It's hard to Believe That "It's Your Love" is on this list. It was the first song in like 30 years or something that stay #1 for 6 weeks and all the awards it won? There are so many great Country love songs and I'm sure it's hard not to add them all. I really don't think Lady A's desereve to be in on this. I love the song I just think there were a lot better ones out there.

Tanya on February 12, 2010 at 3:05 pm

    D.J. on January 30, 2010 at 8:06 am
  32. I most definately think "Its your love" should be right next to clint and lisa's song. as much as I love Faith Hill, I really would not consider it to be a love song at a wedding, maybe at the reception. "It's your love" should be in the top 5 of these.

Myrasue on January 30, 2010 at 6:28 am
  33. Deana Carter's "Strawberry Wine"

Nicolas on January 30, 2010 at 12:31 am
