If you watched the Golden Globe Awards this year, you likely recall a flustered T Bone Burnett stalling for time just a bit to let Ryan Bingham find his way to the podium when “The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart)” swiped the honor for Best Original Song.
Eventually, T Bone made the speech himself, and the Golden Globes moved on with no sight nor sound on television from Ryan.
Ryan gets a second chance to get it right at the Oscar Awards. “The Weary Kind” was nominated Tuesday by the Motion Picture Academy for Best Original Song, and it’s doubtful anyone will have trouble locating him this time around.
As it turns out, Ryan was having a drink at the somewhat informal Globes with Jeremy Renner, who was nominated Tuesday for an Oscar for his role in The Hurt Locker. Ryan didn’t realize the Song trophy was being doled out until it was too late.
“I missed getting the award because I was at the bar,” he confessed to People. “So I’ve learned that I have to stay in my seat.”
Tuesday was a pretty good day for the cast and crew of Crazy Heart. Jeff Bridges picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, a category that has him pitted against Jeremy Renner. Maggie Gyllenhaal is also a finalist for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Meanwhile, another of those Best Actor nominees could have Ryan Bingham fans confused. Do they pull for Jeff Bridges? Or do they pull for George Clooney, whose frequent-flier character in Up In The Air is named… Ryan Bingham?
Look for both the real Ryan Bingham and the Clooney version when the Oscars air March 7.
