Anyone who knows Kenny Chesney knows how deeply his fans influence the decisions he makes – because in the end, he believes in the connection of the music and the people who love it. When Apple introduced their iPhone, Kenny bought his tour staff the first issue, and when artist apps started popping up, he started studying what was out there.
“It’s a good way to put your songs and tour directly in your fans’ hands,” Kenny says. “With the iPhone’s capability, it’s a great opportunity to let your fans get in there and really experience the music… and the shows… and well, all of it. So, I decided rather than be first, I’d take some time and create something that gives the fans the most comprehensive application we could create. And I wanted it to be free for them, just to say thanks for being part of all of this!”
Working with Nashville-based design and innovation firm Aloompa’s owners Drew Burchfield, Kurt Nelson and Tyler Seymour, the team responsible for the Bonnaroo app started from scratch and created “the app I’d've liked one of my favorite artists to have had when I was a kid living on music.” With a No Shoes Radio component that provides an extensive playlist – and keeps playing as you move through the other function no matter where you go or where you are, you can have Kenny’s personal mix – from live cuts, song demos, favorite records and backstage from the man The Los Angeles Times deemed “the Entertainer of the People” – playing as iPhone and iPod touch users navigate the application’s other functions.
Not only can any show be located, but you can go to the box office and buy tickets, invite your friends and even use the iPhone’s GPS to give you directions straight to the parking lot. Much of the music is available in the store – by song and album, plus both Kenny Chesney gear and the cool No Shoes Radio logo stuff, too. And there’s exclusive news and updates via the app.
iPhone and iPod touch users have access to photo galleries from shows, shoots and the studio, videos to watch and a Twitter capability that allows you to sign in and Tweet without leaving Kenny’s application. And if while reading the feed you need to know what that song was, just tilt your iPhone to get the song information… then tilt back, and you’re right where you were before you went sideways in search of a song.
“When Kurt and Drew said, ‘What would you like it to do?,’ I said, ‘Everything…,’” says Kenny, “because that’s the point of an iPhone app: take the things an iPhone can do and let it bring your music alive for the people who love it. What they came back with was – as I said when they showed me the final version – awesome.”
