Carrie Underwood Goes Out to Play

If she was blowing out candles on her birthday cake on Wednesday, Carrie Underwood likely didn’t bother to count out the 27 wicks that should have decorated the dessert.

She’s piled up some impressive numbers in the music business: 11 straight chart-topping singles, 11 million albums sold, 1.2 million tickets sold on her last concert tour. But she’s a bit nonplussed by all the music-business arithmetic.

“I remember in the beginning it was like, ‘How many did I sell this week? How many people are going to be here?’” she told the Associated Press. “It was all about numbers, and to be honest now I don’t even look at anything because I’m happy. When I see numbers it either makes me happy or brings me down. I’d rather just be happy and leave it at that.”

She’s probably not counting, but if she did, Carrie would discover that Thursday — the day after her birthday — is just the beginning of a stretch that will pile up thousands of road miles as she plays more than 50 shows on her Play On Tour through June 20. With Craig Morgan and Sons Of Sylvia opening the concerts, Carrie kicks things off in Reading, Pa., with a production that reaches a new level.

“The stage is bigger, there are more lights, there’s more tricks up our sleeve,” she said. “We have a lot of moving parts on the stage. I kind of get to fly over the audience. It’s really cool. It’s just a lot of stuff. My band’s great, wardrobe’s great. It’s just more. It’s all of the bells and whistles and sprinkles on the cupcake.”

If you can’t be in Reading for the opening date, you can still catch Carrie Thursday on GAC’s Headline Country. She’s featured along with Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn, Miranda Lambert and Montgomery Gentry. The episode debuts at 9 p.m. ET.

Count on it.

  4. Diamond and star it is very obvious that you 2 are not fans of Carrie.I will never understand why the Taylor fans will always put Carrie down.Oh I forgot Taylor fans know that Taylor does not have the vocals to sing.Just because you run up and down the stage and shake your head from one side to the other, does not make you an entertainer and that is what Taylor does.Ever thought of why she does this,to cover up the fact that she can not sing in tune or on key.You 2 may not like the fact that Carrie does not run uo and down the stage and act like a chicken with their head cut off,but at least you are hearing on e of the greatest voices in country music. Each year Carrie gets better with her stage presentance and reguardless how you 2 feel about Carrie is not going to make a singer out of Taylor. So get over your selves and stop being a total sore looser because taylor can not sing.

  6. Can not wait to see Carrie. I love everything she does. Her voice is out of this world. She never ceases to amaze me.

  7. carrie has got an ok voice but she is awful on stage she just looks and acts really strange with her legs she just weird ,taylor blows her away on the stage and carrie always screams to try and hit high notes!!!

diamond on March 14, 2010 at 6:18 am
    • It's extremely intriguing how you always have the time to bash Carrie. One thing, It'd like to HEAR Taylor blow us away with her vocals. You're just bitter that Carrie has more talent than Taylor could ever have. You bash Carrie, and another million praise her.. Hmm.. look at the odds.. Give it up diamond.

mariah on March 14, 2010 at 12:17 pm
    • Okay, I'm literally about to blow a blood vessel because of you. You are bitter, horrid, and jealous of Carrie and her immense success (FAR bigger than Taylor's and always will be). At least Carrie can HIT the high notes (or any notes for that matter), unlike Taylor who couldn't stay in tune if she had a karaoke machine on stage with her. Carrie is always a better performer than Taylor because vocals are part of performing. Taylor doesn't have the voice like Carrie.

I'm SO sick of you having the nerve to take your tween self over to the Carrie threads purely to hate on her. You need to grow up and learn that there will always be threats to your favorites in life, and life won't always go the way you want. Get over yourself, quit hating on Carrie, and stay to your Taylortard threads.

      • it is a free country and i will go and say what i want!!! truth hurts doesn't it!!!!

diamond on March 14, 2010 at 9:09 pm
        • You obviously haven't seen Carrie live and in person because she is impeccable. I will never understand bashing artists on there pages or in articles. If you don't like it then just don't listen to it! It's not rocket science just a kindergarten concept!

Hannah on March 14, 2010 at 9:56 pm
        • no.. that so called "truth" doesn't hurt because it isn't the truth. You want the truth? The truth is that Taylor "not so" Swift cannot sing. Yeah she sounds decent on cd, but hey! Britney sounds decent on cd. But very few artist sounds amazing live. Here's an example of how amazing Carrie is, on cd and LIVE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEHZ3yffQ8s

          The truth hurts, doesn't it!!

mariah on March 15, 2010 at 3:35 am
        • Truth would hurt if you actually TOLD the truth for once. GET OVER YOURSELF AND GET OUT OF THE CARRIE THREADS. NO ONE WANTS YOU AROUND THESE THREADS WHEN ALL YOU WILL DO IS PROMOTE YOUR AMATEURISH ARTIST WHO'S VOCALS WILL ALWAYS BE THIRD-RATE COMPARED TO CARRIE'S.
          LEAVE.

aisecaj on March 16, 2010 at 4:39 am
    • DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT REAL TALENT DO YOU DIAMOND!
CARRIE IS VERY TALENTED AND IS THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER TODAY!
SHE HAS THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL AND GOD GIVEN TALENT THAT YOU WISHED TAYLOR HAD. CARRIE DOESN'T SCREAM AND IF YOU KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT MUSIC, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT! YOU ARE JUST JEALOUS AND THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM, BUT CARRIE IS THE BEST AND SHE IS HERE TO STAY! YOU NEED TO GO AND GET A LIFE AND GROW UP!

NOT HAPPY on March 15, 2010 at 3:59 am
      • Hey Diamond; if it's 99.99999% of the people on these threads telling you to grow up and learn what good music is (which is Carrie and not Taylor not-so Swift), then maybe you should DO IT. And after that, STAY AWAY from the Carrie threads for good! You don't see us barging into your Taylortard posts to bash her. You need a life if this is what your enjoyment in life is.

aisecaj on March 16, 2010 at 4:41 am
    • diamond-you always seem to be on the Carrie articles. Carrie by far blows your teen queen (oh wait-she is 20)out of the water. Carrie has the vocals and stage presence and what Taylor can pull off is off key sing speak, slinging her hair like a head banger, and playing her guitar. Please-there is no comparison. Find a Taylor blog and commiserate with the other tweens.

  10. I have been to many concerts (not only country) and can honestly say that Carrie's concert was one of the best I have attended. Her vocals and stage productions were fantastic and well orchestrated. BRILLIANTLY DONE!!!!!! i think it is great that she is promoting the Grand Ole Opry in her and Randy's version of I told You So. She also gives kudos to Miranda Lambert and Beyonce in one of her sets. It still amazes me that her vocals sounds as good as her records. She is truly the ENTERTAAINER OF THE YEAR and FAVORITE FEMALE VOCALIST. There is no one better!!!!!!

    • You took the words right out of my mouth. There really isn't anyone like her. She's a class act, and she exhibits that in every one of her shows.

      She's the total package.

  11. I'm going to see her next Friday — I can't wait. The concert is going to be amazing.

  12. I am seeing Carrie twice in May. Once here in NO CA and the next night in Reno, NV. Carrie has such a clear, pure voice which to me sets her apart – I can always understand the words she sings. She is an incredible live performer and I can't wait to see this tour. She doesn't need all the bells and whistles because of that magnificent voice but she loves her fans and wants to make it an extra special night for them. Have a great tour Carrie, safe travels to you and God Bless!

  13. I'm going to try and get tickets for Carrie's concert in Everett Wa. in May,so far they say she's sold out. She is good,so I don't doubt that. This will be my 3rd time to see her,so I may have to spend more money since it will probably be my last. Have a good summer Carrie, leave alittle time for Mike, thats important

  21. I can't wait until June 13 at Rupp Arena in Lexington! School's out (Hey school staff get excited too!) and it's on a Sunday night so I can sleep in on Monday! Last time it was the Keith and Carrie tour and it was on a Saturday night. I bought tickets knowing the brass (I play trumpet) were playing at church the next day both services. My friend with me iwas a Minister's wife. So half way through Keith's show, she started getting worried. I wanted so much to stay but knew I was going to be dead early the next morning. So sadly, we had to leave early. But this time? I'm seeing the whole show!

  25. I am going to see her in April. Can't wait. From what I hear the show is going to be great with a lot of new things. New speaker system, techs, etc. and Carrie doing a lot of different things. FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

  26. I wish her all the luck in the world. I hope everything goes the way she wants it to. She's so humble and I'm sure when you first start out you want to know everything that has to do with numbers. I'm glad she's happy with just being who she is now. Her fans will always take care of her. Her voice is stunning. The fact she can sing live just means more now-a-days. I'd rather not be lied to by other performers. Carrie knows she's doing what she wants to do because of the fans who play, buy and go see her music. Good Luck Carrie!!!!
