Country music was very good to Billy Ray Cyrus. His smash debut single, “Achy Breaky Heart,” made the Kentucky native a national star and paid the bills for his family for many years, before Billy Ray successfully branched out into TV and film, most recently playing a country singer in the TV series, Hannah Montana. However, Hannah Montana star and Billy Ray’s daughter, Miley Cyrus, has some pretty harsh words for the musical genre.
AOL’s The Boot reports on an interview Miley did with Parade magazine in which she says of country music, “It scares me. It feels contrived on so many levels. Unless you’re wearing a cowboy hat and cowboy boots and singing and whining about your girlfriend or boyfriend leaving you it’s not going to sell. I think that’s why my dad finally got out of it. You have to wear those cowboy boots and be sweet as pie. It makes me nervous, the politics of it all.”
In other Miley news, she recently recorded a duet with Poison lead singer Bret Michaels called “Nothing to Lose.” The song was recorded three different times, and one version was…you guessed it — a country version.

Her comments about country music are less troubling than her pictures with her dad. They look more like a couple than father and daughter. Creepy.
I have read all the commits and must say I am a little disgusted with the whole thing. Miley is a teenager and we all know that they have a habit of saying what they feel "at the time". Miley is very protective of her dad as he is of her and who knows how far she will go in the music business. I am a little concerned about some of the chioices she has made.
I love Billy Ray and am sorry to hear he isn't going to be part of Country music anymore because he is a great singer. His ballands can bring you to tears.
I personally can't help but think what an impact Miley could have if she started recording Chirstian music. I really think God could use her to get through to young people. She is sincere and has such a stage presents one can't help but wish she would take that talent in a better direction.

Are you kidding me? There are politics in EVERY genre of music! Nothing in America goes without politics. It's sad, but it's true. It's amazing that she can single out country only when that's what helped her get her start and go anywhere with her career. If she hadn't had a facmous daddy, Hannah Montana might not have waited for her and out the window that career would have gone!

OK Wendy reporter…you obviously don't know much about the history of country music and Billy Ray Cyrus. He had such a backlash from country music. It HAS NOT BEEN GOOD TO HIM! They won't even play his music on the radio even though he tours every year to sold out crowds! His music is better than half of the stuff being marketed to radio but he has never has been part of the "good ole boy crowd". If you don't kiss tail in Nashville, you are passed over and the next thing you know, people think you don't exist anymore. Well Billy Ray proved them all wrong by going into acting, continuing to tour world wide, having a #1 show on PAX TV for 5 years, countless movies and Hannah Montana. Neither Miley nor her father need country music to crap on them anymore.

I can't believe so many comments were about how rude Miley was to say this but then followed it by some very nasty things said about her. It's sad so many people in the World feel the need to bash and be so mean towards others, especially children! Many kids/teens go through the stages where they don't like country music or don't really praise it. It is normal! Now people might say it's a little more popular bc of Taylor Swift but Taylor isn't even really what many people consider true country music. I'd never want my children to be famous because they could never speak of their likes or dislikes without having such horrible,mean and nasty things said about them. It's a very sad World indeed…..

I am not a fan of Miley or Billy Ray, but she makes one point that I have to agree with. The music being played on today's radio stations is not country music. I'm not saying that this music is bad, it's just not country. There are only a select few who are making country music. Alan Jackson, George Strait, Joey & Rory, Lee Ann Womack, Jamey Johnson to name a few. For those who hunger for some new and real country music, check out Jake Hooker, Amber Digby and Dale Watson.
Well, more than half of the songs by miley cyrus sound like country to me…..Does her comment that "you have to be sweet as pie" and that "it scares her" mean that she can't be sweet? idk…. and i kno the genre is based off of crying for your lover and whatnot but as a writer in this genre primarily, not every song has to be that way. I bet i can name 10 country singers or more who've only sang about that a few times and haven't used a cowboy hat and boots to get where they are today. all it needs is a little twang whether its an actual sound or if it pulls at ur heart strings- either way its country.

I'm appalled by some of the comments here. Anyone who thinks Billy Ray was treated well by the industry is not being honest with themselves and there are other artists in the same boat. His music and his live performances are awesome so why did radio not play anything he released? I would bet Miley's remarks have a basis in what she noted growing up….all the hassle and heartbreak her Dad went through. It could be a country song itself. I just saw Miley perform on American Idol. She's going to flop as a pop artist, and she's burned the bridge back to Country. Good riddance, ungrateful diva.
I'd make one prediction: "Miley will flop as a pop singer." She was only successful as Hannah Montana, a Disney creation. She can't really sing. Her acting isn't good. Best not to diss anyone these days – best to stay positive but feelings are hurt I guess her run at country radio with the Climb didn't make the climb and there are alot of different artists to enjoy in todays country music with hats and no hats. It's obvious when one is not accepted there's no patience today – I noticed Taylor Swift was up for 8 Grammy's – 4 or three pop noms and 4or 5 country noms and she worked her fanny off this past year courting POP radio , MTV etc, her record sales came from POP audience but when she didn't win any of the POP awards (her label says she is a POP artist and markets her as such)and she won a country award she immediately said in her acceptance speech "I love country music", now you know if she would have won the POP categories instead of country, she would have said "I love POP music"
Miley needs to get out and stay out of country music. She doesn't have the soul to be a successful singer in any genre, but particularly not country. Country music, the real country music, requires that the artist have soul which pretty much locks that girl out. She has shown her real person through the different interview and photo layouts she has done.

Miley is a product of her parents upbringing. They seem so infatuated with her, somebody needs to be the adult. I don't watch MTV but if somebody does, would you please tell me it they played her video "The Climb". Talk about biting the hand that feeds her. GAC and CMT both play The Climb. I have read the interview with Miley and I came up up with this. She leaves Disney in Jan. 2011 maybe she also loses her record deal with Hollywood Records . She tried to get picked up by a major label in Nashville and nobody want her. She got mad and slammed country music.

I think Ms. Cyrus's handlers need to do a better job of preparing her for interviews. Rather then letting her mouth off willy nilly about something she obviously and sadly does not understand, they need to be helping her not alienate a potential audience she may need later. Face it, she's 17 with a Disney background. We've all seen the wonderful track record of other Disney stars. If she is going to survive beyond the tween and bubble gum crowd in music, she's got to start laying the foundation now.
