Sammy Kershaw Launches Political Campaign

Sammy Kershaw announced on Monday his candidacy for Lt. Governor in the state of Louisiana.

It’s the second time Sammy’s run for the position in his homestate. He did it first in 2007, collecting 30 percent of the vote, though he was a late addition to the ballot, campaigning less than two months. He spent much of the time trying to convince voters that his bid for votes wasn’t a joke — this country singer really wanted to hold the office. And he wants to try again.

“Look, man, I had a good time,” Sammy says of the 2007 race. “It was a whole lot of fun. I didn’t really want Election Day to come, ‘cause I was havin’ that much fun politickin’ and goin’ all over the state. I mean, it was just like touring. It’s like the entertainment business, man. That’s all it is. And that’s all that office is, is promotin’ the state and the people and the cultures of Louisiana — not just to the country but to the whole wide world.”

With that in mind, Sammy’s running what he calls the Real People Campaign, pledging to represent the working class of Louisiana. And pledging that he’ll do the job that’s required of the Lt. Governor, not spend his time trying to work his way up to the governorship.

“I’m sick and tired of guys who just use that office as a steppin’ stone to get to the governor’s mansion,” he says. “That’s all they do. So they get in there and they waste that office is what they do, for four years — sometimes eight — waitin’ for that governor’s mansion. So what needs to happen is a guy that’s really serious about that job [gets elected], like me.”

Sammy intends to promote Louisiana as an entertainment destination, to promote arts education in schools and to encourage conservative values, including pro-life, pro-gun and pro-marriage platforms.
