When Ottawa Senators hockey player Mike Fisher married Carrie Underwood July 10, he knew what he was getting into. The bride is beautiful, talented and under a lot of scrutiny.

Because of that, any man on her arm is also going to be the source of public interest — especially when his job is the kind of public vocation that a pro athlete pursues. So when when Mike broke to chat with reporters during a hockey camp for kids in Canada on Wednesday, he was prepared for an onslaught of relationship-related questions, including how he’s adjusting to paparazzi.

“It is what it is,” he said, according to Canada’s CTV. “I’m never really used to it. She’s used to it, but it’s a little different for me and [I’m] learning to deal with it. It’s part of life I guess now, and you can use it for good or bad, too.”

While he’s stepped into the spotlight, Mike is well aware that the cameras are primarily focused on his wife.

“If I’m with her,” he said, “they’re not looking at me, so that’s good.”

Mike and Carrie will have a lot of logistics to work out with the marriage. She lives in Nashville but spends a lot of her time on the road playing concerts in other cities. He lives in Ottawa but spends a lot of his time on the road playing games in other cities.

“Probably the airport will be the main residence,” he joked. “There will be lots of travelling.”

One date the couple has likely already circled in red: Dec. 23. Ottawa will be in Nashville for a game that day against the NHL Predators at Bridgestone Arena. It’s the only time the two teams meet this year, and it comes at the same venue where Carrie co-hosted the CMA Awards each of the last two years. The Senators, incidentally, will have Christmas off. After the Nashville game, their next match comes Dec. 26 against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Ottawa.

Look for Carrie tonight on GAC’s Superstar Sessions at 8 p.m. ET.

  7. Hi aisecaj,

You have a high commentator rating, so can you tell us how you know that Carrie and Mike are building a new house in Ottawa?
Carrie's name would be Carrie Underwood Fisher, if she added her married name onto her maiden name. But, Carrie's legal name is now Carrie Fisher, and her professional name is Carrie Underwood. Congratulations Carrie and Mike.
Carrie was AWESOME this mornning on the Today show!!! She looked fantastic!!! Love you Carrie!! Yes, Mike has a new fan. I have been watching him play on television.

    • Hi Debbie. :)

Carrie has mentioned in numerous interviews that they are going to have two homes — one in Nashville, and one in Ottawa. They haven't revealed when they will live in each home, how often they will, but I'm sure they'd never reveal that anyways for privacy purposes.
They plan on keeping Carrie's home in Nashville for a home when Carrie's schedule is more hectic than Mike's, when Mike is in the off-season of hockey, and they have stated that they will "most likely settle in the Nashville home".
Carrie mentioned before she sang "Wasted" at the beginning of her Ottawa concert from her Play On Tour that she will now call the city her "second hometown", which hinted off interviewers that they would make a second home there.
She will reside there with Mike during the hockey season, but since she's going back on tour for another 5-6 months this fall, she won't be there very often. http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20406155,...

  11. They can look to the Urbans for advice on how to adjust and compromise. They seem to have it mastered.

  12. I don't see them having a bit of a problem with all the spotlights on them. The only problem, I see them having is not with each other. The problem mainly with the media saying there having this or that problem in their marriage and not of it being anywhere near the truth. That's because both don't attend those parties anywhere or do something crazy in front of the camera.

  13. They compromise so well and got good advice from Brad Paisley with his marriage, to actress Kim. Mike and Carrie will have their home base in Ottawa while he continues to play hockey for the senators. But that doesn't mean she's stuck in concrete up there…she'll still need to spend most of her time in Nashville. But once he retires from Hockey (Mike is 30 now so perhaps 10 more years?), they will move to Nashville as Country singers can continue singing forever or until the voice just goes completely. To imagine Carrie that old..hmm..I'll never see it. I'll be long gone by then.

    • Sorry to say I think your wrong Canada is going to be their refuge not Nashville. That's where they'll go to have alone time and privacy where she can also get out of the spotlight.Nashville is a work home and will continue to be so She also has Checotah Oklahoma with her Mom and Dad and Grandad that's where they'll go fishing and Mike Go hunting maybe with Carrie's Dad.I'm so happy Carrie found a guy who can live with her career.

      • They're building a house in Ottawa, and they're keeping Carrie's house in Nashville.
        They'll have 2 homes.

aisecaj on July 30, 2010 at 4:05 am
      • Like aisecaj said , they are building a new house in Ottawa. What I said about Ottawa home base first was from an interview with Mike at his camp in a Toronto Newspaper. He does a children's Hockey Camp up there and he knew he'd be bombarded by Canadian press as soon as he started camp. So he was prepared and got it all out of the way first so he could spend the rest of the time with the children. http://www.mikefisherhockeycamp.com/

  15. I think they will be just fine. I bet even Mike gets some new fans for hockey and I am sure Carrie has picked up more than a few new fans in Canada! Congrats to them and can't wait to see Carrie preform again~
