A group of just over 30 developmentally challenged individuals visiting Nashville this week for the 2nd Annual ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp got the surprise of a lifetime last night. It was karaoke night for the campers as they gathered for a private event at Winners Bar & Grill, a local nightclub, to take the stage and belt out some of their favorite tunes. A couple songs in, a group of campers were onstage performing “No One Else On Earth” when none other than Wynonna Judd herself appeared. Jaws dropped and the stunned campers’ looks of shock quickly gave way to smiles a mile wide. Wynonna wasted no time joining in on the fun. But this was not her night to perform, it was the campers’ night to shine and Wynonna made sure all eyes were on them.
One after the other, campers took the mic for their moment in the spotlight. The energy was amazing and the performers were fearless.
“I wish every American had the spirit and feeling of freedom that these kids do” said Wynonna after all the performances. “Music is such a healer and it’s such a bonding experience. All these kids come from different circumstances, but when they were together in song, it was as is if we were as one. I can communicate with them through music unlike I can just verbally – we can look at each other and have a common language through music. I’ll go anywhere for that!”
One of the campers, a young man named Matt who was lucky enough to share the stage with Wynonna, said, ”It was probably one of the coolest experiences of my whole entire life – it was amazing, just so much fun!”
The feeling was mutual. ”I was having not a great day, and I came here and I had a total attitude adjustment – I just got a big group hug tonight that I needed,” said Wynonna.
