In just a few years, Lady Antebellum has become one of the most popular and successful bands in country music. In GAC’s new special, Backstory: Lady Antebellum, premiering Sunday, September 11 at 8/7c, the trio sits down to reflect on how they met, became a band and started on the journey to superstardom. Hillary’s, Charles’ and Dave’s parents also help tell the story and share never before seen childhood photos and performance videos.

After graduating from the University of Georgia with a finance degree, Charles moved to Nashville to pursue a solo career. Dave, also a UGA grad, was working an accounting job in Atlanta. Having written together once in college, Charles contacted Dave and was soon driving to Atlanta every other weekend to write. Dave eventually quit his job and joined Charles in Nashville.

“His brother (singer Josh Kelley) was a big influence on us so I figured maybe we could write songs for Josh or maybe for other country artists,” David said. He and Charles were decidedly against ‘day jobs’ as they pursued their music ambitions as solo artists, maxing out credit cards in the process. In 2006, Charles met Hillary in a Nashville club. Hillary was already a fan of Charles’ music from MySpace and the pair along with Dave agreed to write together.

“There was this intangible magic that happened when the three of us got in a room together,” Hillary said. The plan was to write for each other’s solo careers, but they took notice of how they sounded as a group. “While doing music demos we found out how well our voices blend together,” Hillary recalled.

Once the newly-formed band had enough songs to put on a showcase, it didn’t take long for the final decision to abandon their solo careers in favor of being a trio. “That show was the straw that broke the camel’s back as far as us deciding to make it a group,” Dave said.

In the few short years since forming Lady Antebellum, the band has enjoyed several No. 1 singles, won numerous Grammy, ACM and CMA awards. They’re gearing up to release their third album, Own The Night, on September 13. GAC has been a supporter of the band from the very beginning.

“From the earliest days of their career as Lady Antebellum, GAC started at ground zero with Charles, Hillary and Dave,” GAC President Ed Hardy said. “We are proud to revisit the journey from their beginning days to their enormous success today. Lady A is a unique and rare music group and they define an era of country music; we love them and are proud to tell their story on GAC.”

Backstory: Lady Antebellum will premiere on Sunday, September 11 at 8/7 c.
