Last night on the Grand Ole Opry stage, Loretta Lynn announced that actress/musician Zooey Deschanel would be playing her in a Broadway musical adaptation of her life story, Coal Miner’s Daughter, reports The Tennessean. Loretta brought Zooey onstage to sing the title song with her.

“I have a friend here tonight,” Loretta said. “I don’t know if y’all remember when Sissy Spacek was with me. I brought her out onstage, and she about fainted. We both fainted … There’s a little girl backstage that’s going to do the play of Coal Miner’s Daughter, and I can think she can sing her…” Loretta paused, then laughed. “…self to death! I didn’t say it! But she’s great.”

“This is a great honor for me,” Zooey said. “This is my hero.”

The paper reports that Loretta and Zooey traded verses on “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and then sang the final chorus together. Plans for a stage adaptation are still in the beginning stages. The producers — Fox Theatricals and Scott Sanders Productions — are the same producers behind Broadway hits including Legally BlondeThe Color PurpleRed and Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Zooey, 32, is the star and a producer of the Fox comedy New Girl. She has also starred in  films including Elf, and (500) Days of Summer.
