Miranda Lambert is everywhere these days and W Magazine is no exception. Miranda sat down with the magazine before her recent show at BOK Arena in Tulsa to talk about everything from her living arrangements with Blake Shelton to what she thinks about Taylor Swift. A former high school cheerleader, Miranda explained why she stayed away from dresses in the early days of her career.

“The tough-girl thing comes naturally to me,” she said. “When I started out, I’d only wear jeans and tank tops. No dresses. I didn’t want these dudes in the bars that I was playing to look me up and down because I’m a blonde girl with blue eyes. I wanted to be heard, not seen. That’s how it all started.”

These days, Miranda wears dresses both onstage and on the red carpet, often with Blake at her side. Though the couple have been married a year and live together on Blake’s farm in Oklahoma, she didn’t sell her own farm, located just 10 miles down the road from Blake. Having a place to go sometimes comes in handy.

“We mostly live at Blake’s, but, if you’re pissed, 10 miles away is far enough,” she explained. “If we have a fight, I can say, ‘Go home’ or ‘I’m going home.’”

It’s not easy to be a female in a genre dominated by male artists. While her girl power anthems about shotguns and kerosene are a far cry from fellow artist Taylor Swift’s lyrics about young love and heartbreak, Miranda gives Taylor credit for what she’s done for the industry.

“Taylor Swift is a pop singer,” she said. “But she really helped country music. When she hit, I was thinking, ‘Thank God Taylor’s out there to show people we’re not cheesy.’ Some people still think that country music is twangy and cheesy, and they pigeonhole us. But I thought, ‘If they’re looking for Taylor’s videos or songs, they might see or hear other people they like. If her fans are watching for her, they might like me too.’”

As Miranda wrapped the W interview to prepare for her show, she revealed life as a headliner isn’t as easy as it looks, especially for a woman. “It’s tough for a girl to be a headliner in country music,” she said. “For instance, I can’t get a sponsor. I love alcohol! You would think a beer company would sponsor me. I’m my own damn sponsor. And I put on my own eyeliner. A woman’s work is never done.”
