Justin Moore & Thomas Rhett: Fishing Fanatics

Country stars like to sing about fishing. Brad Paisley risks the wrath of his wife just to cast a line in “I’m Gonna Miss Her” while Justin Moore asks an ex-flame if her new beau even knows how to fish in his hit “Bait A Hook.” When country stars aren’t singing about fishing, it turns out they’re actually heading to the fishing hole themselves.

When Justin goes to the lake, he’s got a tiny fishing partner in tow. He’s been taking his two and a half-year-old daughter, Ella, fishing ever since she was a baby. She’s old enough now to understand it and recently, Justin and his wife Kate took Ella fishing on their brand new boat.

“I got [Ella] the Minnie Mouse pole,” he said. “And it was pretty funny, she actually watched her bobber and she enjoyed it and she’s actually asked me to go since then.”

Justin loves spending time with his daughter and hopes she passes her love of fishing to her little sister, Kennedy, who was born in November. “I love having her around, regardless of what we’re doing,” he said. “Maybe she’ll be able to teach Kennedy when she gets old enough.”

Newcomer Thomas Rhett mentions a line about fishing in his debut single, “Somethin’ to Do with My Hands.” While he’s listing off things he can do with his hands like golfing or shooting pool in his song, it turns out fishing is one of his favorite hobbies. “I love to fish,” he said. “I don’t get to do it a whole lot but when I do get a chance and when the weather’s right I love just going to the lake and sitting on the dock, even if I don’t catch anything.”

Sometimes, it’s not about catching fish at all. “It’s just one of those things where I just like to go sit and just think, or bring buddies out there and just sit and maybe drink a beer and catch a fish or go to the Caney Fork and float it and catch trout or whatever,” he said. “I just love fishing.”
