Dierks Bentley likes vintage things. He famously duct tapes his well-worn boots before each show; his tour bus recently tripped one million miles; and he still drives around in the same truck he had when he moved to Nashville. So when he purchased a vintage Airstream trailer, he went straight to some of the best “junkers” in the business, Amie and Jolie Sikes, known as the Junk Gypsies, to renovate the unit with their signature vintage flair.
Since Dierks was on tour, he held a video chat with the Junk Gypsies to give them an idea of what he wanted. Amie and Jolie then headed out in search of the perfect ‘junk’ pieces to make Dierks’ vision come to life. Among their finds was an old church pew they sawed in half to use as seating and vintage music posters used to make a table top.
A stop at Bediko’s in Round Top, Texas — where metal artist and fellow junker Kwaku Bediko lives and works — led them to a motorcycle gas tank, which Kwaku helped them convert into wall sconces to include Dierks’ love of motorcycles. They had him add metal wings to the tank sconces in honor of Dierks’ wife’s favorite song, “Sharp Cutting Wings”, by Lucinda Williams.
When Dierks arrived at the Airsteam to see the reveal, he was blown away by the vintage details the Junk Gypsies incorporated. Among them was an 8-track player that came with the Airstream, preserved by the Junk Gypsies — who also managed to find a few 8-track cassettes to go along with it. You can catch the renovation of Dierks’ Airstream on Junk Gypsies on HGTV July 20 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
