Scotty McCreery reached celebrity status following his American Idol win but that hasn’t stopped him from leading a normal life – or as normal of a life as an Idol winner can. He spent his summer touring with Brad Paisley and performing is own sold-out shows across the country. This fall, he’s splitting his time between being a college student at North Carolina State University and his music career.
“I made a 98 on my first math test,” Scotty told the Washington Post. “I was pumped about that because math is not one of my best things.”
In a typical week, Scotty attends classes on Monday and Wednesday and tours and records Thursday through Sunday. He’s even managed to fit in playing intramural flag football on Tuesdays. He lives in an off campus apartment with a few of his best friends about 15 minutes from his hometown of Garner, North Carolina and he’s a one hour plane ride from Nashville.
“Going to State, it gives me a chance to have a little bit of a home base, to have a little bit of normalcy — whatever normal is,” he said. “I think it’s good for me as a person. I’m still figuring out what my normal is.”
With a large, loyal fan base and a record-breaking debut album, Scotty has accomplished many career firsts this year. What he’s still looking for though is a Top 10 hit at country radio. That is his top priority going into the new year.
“We’re still looking for songs because that’s what the second album is about for me,” he said. “I’m going to be picking and choosing. Country music is about the songs. This last year I’ve had sold-out shows, I’ve won awards and stuff, but I haven’t had that huge monster hit yet. That’s a song I really need to have.”
Before he gets around to releasing his second studio album, Scotty will release a Christmas album, Christmas With Scotty McCreery, on October 16.
