For those of us that hate to change the calendar from September to October, Jake Owen is working hard to keep the warm summer vibes alive long into the fall. Jake’s Endless Summer EP, which is available now, consists of four light tunes with a vibrant and sunny disposition.
Heavy on groove and an optimistic feel, the Endless Summer EP plays out like many of the great summer stories we all know. “Summer Jam,” featuring newcomers Florida Georgia Line, opens with shimmering guitar before an anthemic, power chord hook rings loud. The rhymes come quick, developing the idea that a summer fling is music to the ears. And while the themes are most certainly light, the feeling is refreshingly carefree, highlighted by lines like, You’re the fireworks flying on the Fourth of July. Jake, who serves as Executive Producer for the project, is still actively promoting his most recent full-length album, 2011’s Barefoot Blue Jean Night. Because this EP is more of a one-off special project, it actually allows Jake the freedom to take some chances he might not otherwise take.
On “Summer Jam” and on the second track, “Pass A Beer,” there is a loose hip-hop influence. On the former, it comes in the vocal rhythm of the verse. On “Pass A Beer,” it comes through with the bass-heavy beat, handclaps and DJ scratches underneath the warm acoustic guitars. Amidst clinking bottlenecks and a party soundtrack, Jake drawls through the verse, Our state of mind stayin’ stuck on summer, before delivering his own country rap on summer staples including boats and girls.
The set also includes a cover of Ben Harper’s 2000 alternative rock hit “Steal My Kisses.” With shout outs to Nashville, Carolina, Southern rain and country dresses, the song lends itself to the format exceedingly well. A beach-ready acoustic progression and soulful vocal breakdown round out the whimsical story about chasing love.
While Jake finds the room in a short set to show off a few different styles, closing song “Surefire Feeling” speaks directly to the sound he sharpened on Barefoot Blue Jean Night. With big chords and a pop/country slant, the power ballad features darting electric leads matching the freeing story of roaring down the highway. Come on, get lost with me, he sings to the girl by his side as they head for the sunset. On the Endless Summer EP, Jake chases the sun, delivering a warm weather collection to help make it through until those sunnier days return.
