Justin Moore did not like Halloween as a child. Even as an adult, he’s still not a fan of the holiday. But thanks to his daughter Ella, he’s starting to enjoy it. “It’s fun to see her get dressed up and go around and trick or treat,” he said.

Even more fun than trick-or-treating was watching Ella hand out candy to other children in their  neighborhood. “She loved last year handing out candy at our house as much as she did going and getting her own,” Justin said. “It was pretty funny to watch her hand it out.”

While Justin and his wife Kate are celebrating Halloween with their young daughters, fellow Arkansas native Hannah Blaylock of Edens Edge recalls how she and her friends celebrated the holiday in her small hometown.

“We never bought Halloween costumes and we never decided what we were gonna be until like the day of,” she said. “It was always like this really spontaneous like let’s pull whatever’s around the house and make up a fun costume. You know, every once in a while we might buy a mask or something. But other than that we really kind of created our own costumes, which was cool.”

Her neighbors were also more likely to hand out homemade treats for Halloween over candy. “My favorite ever was, all the old women would make popcorn balls,” she said. She loved them so much she tried to make them herself. “They weren’t as good as the ones when I was a kid,” she admitted. “But I always remember the popcorn balls. Those were my favorite.”
