Darius Rucker’s new single, “Wagon Wheel,” is a re-make of a popular song recorded by a number of artists. The track is based off a portion of “Rock Me Mama” written by Bob Dylan and later finished by Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show the band who recorded the original version. Darius was inspired to cut the track during his daughter’s high school talent show.
“We were watching my daughter, and the faculty band gets up and they play ‘Wagon Wheel,’” Darius said. “I’m sitting in the audience, and they get to the middle of the chorus, and I turned to my wife, and I go, ‘I’ve got to cut this song. I’m serious. This all happened in three-and-a-half minutes, four minutes, while they’re playing the song.”
Darius texted his producer, Frank Rogers, and plans were made to cut the song. Artists including Little Feat, Jeremy McComb and Mumford & Sons have also recorded versions of the single. Darius made a special appearance with Old Crow Medicine Show during their set on the Grand Ole Opry to perform “Wagon Wheel.”
Darius will release his new album, True Believers, on January 22.
