Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Lee Ann Womack, Ralph Stanley, Jamey Johnson and more are featured on Divided & United, a two-disc tribute album of Civil War songs. The project celebrates the music that was vital to the history of America on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The album will be released in Fall 2013.
Divided & United will also feature an essay by musician, filmmaker and historian John Cohen. “This record aspires to erase the legacy of segregation and through music seeks reconciliation instead, in order to celebrate a great musical heritage of America, born in pain, war and prejudice,” he writes in the essay.
The project is a result of a collaboration between ATO Records and music supervisor Randall Poster. Randall was inspired to make Divided & United while working on the film Country Strong in Nashville. While in Music City, he learned of its rich Civil War history and happened across a Tennessean cover story honoring the war’s 150th anniversary.
Randall handpicked the artists involved and assembled the collection after extensive research. The songs selected represent hope, loss, camaraderie, compassion and the distinction of the North and South.
