Monday was a big day for Jake Owen. Prior to hosting a free Nashville Block Party celebrating his fourth consecutive No. 1 single, “Anywhere With You,” which brought out more than 20,000 fans, Jake had the top of his right ring finger amputated, reports The Tennessean.

“So today they cut from the joint up, they took it off,” Jake said. “I’m kind of trying to pretend like it doesn’t hurt right now, but it’s a little sensitive. Yeah, it hurts. I was like, ‘Man, you don’t realize? Can we just wait and do this tomorrow because I have this show tonight that’s a really big deal?’”

Jake’s doctors insisted though and seven hours after the surgery, a result of an injury to his fingers from a go-kart accident over Fourth of July weekend, Jake was onstage. When the accident happened, Jake heard from a number of people, including his mother, that he needed to be more careful. It was a text message from Gary Overton, the CEO of Sony Music Nashvile, Jake’s record label, that left him rattled. It read, “You need to think about the big picture.”

“He knows I think about the big picture nonstop, that’s all I think about,” Jake said. “But this is life and life happens. When you make plans for your life, that’s when life makes plans for you. You just figure out (how to make things work). At the end of the day, too, it’s all about me as a human being and my voice and what I say and how I handle myself. I’m just never going to stop being me … I’m just prone to this kind of (stuff). I don’t know why. I wish I wasn’t.”

Jake’s free block party also included appearances from Dierks Bentley, Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett and The Cadillac Three.
