Charlie Daniels will pay tribute to one of his musical heroes, Bob Dylan, when he releases Off The Grid – Doin’ It Dylan on April 1. As a young studio musician in the ‘60s, producer Bob Johnston called Charlie to play guitar on three of Bob Dylan’s Nashville-produced projects.
“It was about 50 years ago when I first became aware of Bob Dylan—and no, I was not naïve enough to think I could swim in the same stream, try to emulate what he had done, or cop his licks,” Charlie said. “Nobody could do that. My ambitions were to provoke some thought, to color the imagery of my songs, to think outside the box of conformity—in other words to be myself.”
According to Charlie, the session work for Bob Dylan not only boosted his confidence but helped legitimize him as a serious musician. Off The Grid – Doin’ It Dylan aims to repay the debt of gratitude Charlie feels towards Dylan by delivering some of his best work on the project.
“Whatever it was Bob Dylan meant by his lyrics, they grabbed the attention of the world and changed the face of music forever,” Charlie said. “He inspired musicians to knock down the restrictive, bubble gum, three minute a side, Tin Pan Alley world that set the parameters of popular music and turn their creative minds loose in a thousand new directions.”
During his 50-plus year career, Charlie has forged his own path, charting hits on rock, country, pop and Christian charts. Known for his skills on guitar, fiddle and mandolin. Off The Grid – Doin’ It Dylan is another example of his seemingly endless creativity.
