Brantley Gilbert is a chart-topping country star these days, but before signing a record deal, it was a stretch to make ends meet. At one point, he sold his cherished 1968 Mercury Cougar to get the money he needed for himself and his band to make a show in Texas.

“It still had the fold-out headlights; it was awesome,” he told Taste of Country. “I needed to get the guys to Texas and back, so me and my dad went up to the guy, told him we’d sell the car to him for $4,000. He was gonna show it, and he said, ‘If you ever want it back, just come to me and I’ll sell it for the same thing you sold it to me for.’”

Eight month later, Brantley returned for his car but the new owner had changed his mind and wanted $25,000, which Brantley couldn’t afford. A few years later Brantley decided to get his car back, with the help of his former fiancée, Jana Kramer.

“I had my mind set on it one night; I was just going to take my car and if he had a problem with it, we’d handle it,” he said. “But my ex-fiancée at the time actually talked to him and I got stuck with the bill, but we did get it back. So it’s in the garage.”

Brantley recently released his latest album, Just As I Am. His new single, “Small Town Throwdown,” featuring Thomas Rhett and Justin Moore, is at radio now.
