Tim McGraw has released his latest single, “Shotgun Rider.” The song, debuted by McGraw with a performance on NBC’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in February, is featured on his new album, Sundown Heaven Town, set to hit stores September 16.
“This is one of those songs that really paints a picture and sets a mood,” McGraw told Rolling Stone Country. “You look over and see the person that you love next to you sitting in the front seat, and you think, ‘How good do I have it? Life is perfect.’ There is a certain warmth to this song and several others like it that really establish the tone for the whole album.”
McGraw has been performing “Shotgun Rider” along with a number of other new tunes during his live shows over the last few months. According to him, releasing a new album isn’t done the way it used to be, with songs and album details kept from the public until the physical album was on store shelves.
“It’s just the nature of where we are with music now,” McGraw said. “Everybody buys singles more than they do albums, and everybody wants to know what’s going on in an artist’s career, what they’re doing next. It’s a way to lead up to an album and give them a glimpse of what’s coming.”
As for how McGraw chose the songs on Sundown Heaven Town, he first listens to demos as a music fan. Even as a child, McGraw says he would listen to songs over and over, guessing what the artist would do next.
“As a kid listening to albums, when I grew up it was vinyl, you’re listening to vinyl and you knew every crease in that album cover, down to the trademark symbol, you knew everything on it,” he said. “You would listen to that music over and over and over again and you would try to pick what the next singles were gonna be. It’s the same thing that I do with my records, or anybody else’s records. What’s your favorite stuff? A lot of times for me, a lot of my favorite things are not necessarily singles.”
McGraw will celebrate the release of Sundown Heaven Town with an American Express® Unstaged show at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom. The concert is scheduled for September 16 at 9/8c and will be streamed live at amexunstaged.com.
