Gwen Sebastian Responds to 50 Shades of Grey Hotel Controversy

Gwen Sebastian is making a stand against hotel owner Jonathan Denby, who made international headlines after replacing the Bibles in the Damson Dene Hotel (located in England’s Lake District) with copies of 50 Shades of Grey. “Tonight millions of women will be curling up in bed with a good book and you can bet your life it won’t be the Bible,” he wrote on his blog. “More likely than not it will be Fifty Shades of Grey.

In response, Gwen — a former contestant on The Voice who is now touring with Blake Shelton — and her record label, Flying Island Entertainment,  shipped copies of Gwen’s single, “Met Him in a Motel Room,” to the hotel in the United Kingdom. The song is the story of a woman who decides against suicide when she finds the Bible in the drawer of a motel room nightstand. Continue Reading

The Voice‘s Gwen Sebastian Has a New Gig

Ed. note: You may have seen North Dakota native Gwen Sebastian during the blind auditions for The Voice, the talent show starring country superstar Blake Shelton. Gwen impressed the four coaches with her rendition of Sugarland‘s “Stay” — and she chose to be on Team Blake for the competition. We asked Gwen to keep us updated during her time on The Voice. Last night, sadly, Gwen lost the battle round with fellow Team Blake member Erin Willett. But all is definitely not lost, as you’ll read below! Here’s our final post from Gwen:

Q&A with Gwen

GACTV.com: Did you have any strategy when going into the battle round?

Gwen: Not really. I knew that I just wanted to go into it as if it weren’t a battle, but rather, as a performance. Both Erin and I had the mentality that we wanted to give our best and sort of saw it as a duet instead of a battle.

GACTV.com: Were you surprised that Blake picked Erin?

Gwen: While I wished I was the one he picked, I am very happy for Erin. Especially with what she was going through. Not only is she a talented and strong singer, she’s an incredibly strong person. I’m very proud to have shared the stage with her and I think she sang her butt off.

GACTV.com: What was it like working with your mentor, Miranda Lambert?

Gwen: Oh my gosh! When I walked in and saw her, I was really excited. I truly look up to her as an artist, and now that I have gotten to know her, as a person. She’s been able to be commercially successful while still maintaining her artistic integrity. That is something that is difficult in this industry, but something I strive for. She gave me some great advice that I will definitely take and use along the way.

GACTV.com: Now that your stint on the show is over, what are your plans? Continue Reading

Q&A with Gwen

GACTV.com: What’s been your favorite “off camera” moment?

Gwen: There have been a few. One is hearing everyone rehearsing in the hallway of the hotel we all stayed at and two, is dinner at Blake’s house.  He invited all of us on his team to a barbecue where we could just hang out without the cameras on. The food was delicious!  Barbecue ribs and steak in LA? Yes! And banana pudding, mashed potatoes and THE best mac & cheese I’ve ever tasted.

GACTV.com: Have you learned anything about Blake that surprises you?

Gwen: Well, maybe his “man crush” on Adam Levine. Wait…that doesn’t surprise me. Blake is a ‘what you see is what you get’ kind of guy. He’s the same off camera as he is on, so nothing has surprised me….not yet.

GACTV.com: How do you feel when you’re watching the show?

Gwen: It’s crazy how every time I watch, I feel like I’m re-living everything, from flying out to LA for my first audition, to the chairs turning around. I get very emotional and find myself pacing the floor back and forth hoping everyone does their best. I kind of feel like everyone’s mom!

Q&A with Gwen

GACTV.com: How did it feel walking down the red carpet to your Battle Round?

Gwen: It was both exciting and nerve racking at the same time. First of all, I’m praying I don’t trip and knock over the big Voice sign, and secondly, I’m going into a situation where I have to literally sing ‘for my life.’ That’s how it felt. Plus, I had to sing against someone who became my friend. Wow! Watching the show this week, really brought all of those feelings back.

Q&A with Gwen

GACTV.com: Which audition do you think was the most unique on the final night of blind auditions?

Gwen: I think Whitney Myer’s rendition of Alicia Keys “No One” was original.  She made it her own solely by her unique voice and phrasing.

We would have down time during filming and one of my favorite things to do was to hang out with the other contestants and listen to them sing.  There were so many unique voices with everyone having his or her own style.  We all became really close in such a short period of time and genuinely were cheering each other on. Q&A with Gwen

GACTV.com: Of the performers who didn’t get a chair turn last night, for whom would you have turned?

Gwen: Ducky Duke; even though his stage presence sold me, if I couldn’t have seen him, I would’ve turned.  I thought he had great tone and chose a unique song.

GACTV.com: Were you surprised that the chairs didn’t turn sooner for anyone?

Gwen: Yes. When Anthony Evans opened his voice, I thought BAM! but, it took quite a while for a chair to turn.

GACTV.com: In your opinion, who had the most unique performance?

Gwen: I think Jamie Lono’s rendition of “Folsom Prison Blues” was brilliant. He made a traditional country song into a bluesy, broken down version. Very cool! I also think Charlotte Sometimes’ voice is extremely unique and special.

GACTV.com: What was the most memorable quote of the night? Continue Reading

Team Blake’s Gwen Sebastian Feels the Love on “The Voice”

Love…

On the day before Valentine’s Day, one where I was hoping for a good chick flick like The Notebook or Pretty Woman, I found myself watching…..The VOICE! That’s all I needed to see. The “love” was there. In James Massone’s, as Cee Lo said, “calm, smooth” voice. In Katrina Parker’s rendition of “One of Us.” In Jordis Unga’s dad’s dance after seeing his daughter wow the coaches. And in Erin Willett’s strong powerful voice, being cheered on by her parents. Blake made it clear to Erin that he wanted her on his team because, “I love to see people react to music like that.”

There was love in each performance, but what about between the coaches? Now for those of you who watched The Voice last year and have seen the first few episodes of season two, who could avoid noticing the tension between the coaches, and particularly last night, even between Blake and Adam, who obviously respect each other on and off that stage?

I believe that when we see Blake, Adam, Cee Lo and Christina fight for a chance to work with each performer, it’s not only competitiveness, but a love for finding new talent. That’s how I felt when I was up on that stage. They seemed very genuine in their words and made it very clear that they wanted to be there — that each coach was there to help us become better. Last night, Adam said, “We’ve all been rejected at some point, so don’t give up”. I believe Adam, Blake, Cee Lo and Christina see a bit of themselves in each of us. They see that we all share the same goals, the same dream and the same love. That love is…music.

About Me…

Hi everyone!  How cool is it that GAC is letting me tell you my story about The Voice!  I’ll keep you up to date each week after the show airs and chat about my experience, as well as dish on some little tidbits of news.

In case you don’t know about me, here I go (in one paragraph):

I grew up on a farm outside of a little town (about 900 people) called Hebron, ND and have hundreds, yes, hundreds of cousins (117 and counting, just on my dad’s side-yikes!) I went to the same school K-12 and my graduating class had 20 students. My nickname is “Lunchbox,” which I happily go by since one of my favorite things is FOOD!  I have a younger brother, whom I look up to not only because he gave me the cutest nephew in the world, but because he has proudly served his country. My parents are farmers and ranchers and they taught me a lot about hard work and determination and how to make your own fun when “there’s nothing else to do.”  I love riding horses and still do when I go back home.  Along with farming, my parents are musicians, so I grew up singing with them as much as I could. I always had a dream to move to Nashville to play country music.  That leads me to my next story: Why I chose to sing “Stay” and why I knew I wanted to be on Team Blake!

Why I Picked Blake to “Stay” on The Voice.. Continue Reading
