GAC Album Review: Thomas Rhett's It Goes Like This

Thomas Rhett’s 2013 album, It Goes Like This.

Thomas Rhett’s brand of country is meant to push boundaries. The 23-year old son of singer/songwriter Rhett Akins has quickly become known along Music Row for blending a downhome drawl with country storylines and a dose of self-aware hip hop. Thomas co-wrote Jason Aldean’s Joe Diffie-inspired thumper “1994” as well as Florida Georgia Line’s No. 1 hit “Round Here,” and on his first LP, the Georgia native continues to blur the lines with a smart, country-fried debut.

Thomas Rhett made his national television debut on FOX & Friends earlier this week, performing his Top 15 hit “Beer With Jesus.” He also talked about writing the tune as well as much of the material on his debut album, set to be released later this year. While in New York, Thomas also opened Jason Aldean’s sold out Night Train Tour stop at Madison Square Garden.

“Playing MSG was incredible!” Thomas said. “I can’t even begin to imagine all of the history that has been made in that place. Having that opportunity so early in my career… man, it’s just a dream come true.” Continue Reading

Thomas Rhett

Thomas Rhett has enjoyed early success as a recording artist with his debut single “Something To Do With My Hands” and his current single, “Beer With Jesus.” He’s also an accomplished songwriter and has cuts by other artists including Jason Aldean who just released “1994,” co-written by Thomas, as his new single. If he could have any artist record a song of his though, it would be Adele.

“If I could pick any artist to write a song for it would have to be an artist that was already an amazing songwriter,” he said. “And when I think of just overall amazing songwriting, for some reason, my mind just goes to Adele. I mean, she has made one of the greatest records of the decade so if I could ever write a song that Adele decided to record, I would feel like I was a pretty awesome songwriter.” Continue Reading

While music is Thomas Rhett’s top priority, he’s not opposed to trying his hand at acting one of these days. He doesn’t think taking on a role would be too far of a stretch from singing in front of huge crowds every night.

“I think being onstage is a lot like acting,” he said. “You’re pretty much playing a version of yourself while you’re on the stage.” Continue Reading

In 2012, Thomas Rhett released his debut single, “Something to Do with My Hands,” and followed it up with his current single, “Beer With Jesus.” He also hit the road on his first major tour and got married. As great as the year was though, he’s excited for 2013.

“I have a feeling that 2013 will be even better,” he said. “It’s amazing that Jason Aldean is bringing me out on his tour. I’ll be the first country act to play Fenway Park, and I’ll also get to play Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, where I’ve been watching my Bulldogs play my whole life. It’s gonna be amazing.” Continue Reading

Thomas Rhett: Performing Vs. Songwriting

Thomas Rhett

Singer-songwriters often refer to themselves as a songwriter first and performer second or vice versa. If Thomas Rhett absolutely had to choose between the two, he’d most likely go with being a performer.

“There really is no feeling like standing backstage and the stage manager says ‘Alright. Two minutes ‘til showtime,’” he said. “And you walk out there and you see the lights and you see the people and your band starts to play. I love both but, there’s really no feeling like walking on stage and playing.” Continue Reading

Thomas Rhett’s  single “Beer with Jesus” was a special song for him long before it was released to radio. The stories he’s hearing from fans about how the song has affected their own lives has made it that much more special. There’s one story in particular that stands out.

“A woman called into a radio station in Pennsylvania a couple weeks ago and voiced that her son had just been killed in a car accident,” Thomas said. “And she came to my show in Pennsylvania and told me that her son’s five best friends were at the funeral and they played my song “Beer with Jesus” and they all got baptized because of the song and what it did to them. So it was pretty awesome.” Continue Reading

Watch Thomas Rhett’s “Beer With Jesus” Video

Thomas Rhett’s “Beer With Jesus” asks the hypothetical question “What would you talk about if you could have a beer with Jesus?” In his new video for the song, Thomas walks into a crowded bar and sits down for a moment of reflection on that very subject.

After hanging his hat on a beer bottle across the table, Thomas picks up his guitar and the noise fades away. He ponders all the things he’d like to ask Jesus while walking through an abandoned and decaying building. As the song ends, Thomas comes back to present day, picks up his hat and packs up his guitar to head home.

Congratulations to Thomas Rhett, who recently married longtime girlfriend Lauren Gregory! The newlyweds had just enough time to escape on a honeymoon before Thomas hits the road on Chris Young’s Liquid Neon Tour.

Thomas’ new single, “Beer with Jesus,” is about going to bar to sit and talk with Jesus over a couple of beers. The song is bringing about interesting reactions from fans.

“Every time I play that song live, a lot of people will cry,” Thomas said. “I’ve had a preacher come up to me saying, ‘Man, I would love to get you up to Wisconsin and sing that song at our church service.’”

The preacher’s request is one Thomas never expected to receive. He co-wrote the song and while he was raised with strict beliefs, his time in college molded those beliefs into what he sings about. Continue Reading

Thomas Rhett’s days as a bachelor are winding down. He revealed to Taste of Country that he will marry fiancée Lauren Gregory later this month.

“We’ve known each other since we were in the first grade,” he said. “We dated once when we were 15, and it didn’t work out. We remained best friends even after we broke up. We both dated other people for like five years. When I heard that she had ended her other relationship — this was last spring — I moved in for the kill. We kissed, and that was it. We dated for probably six months, and we got engaged last December, around Christmas time.”

Thomas knew the perfect way to ask Lauren to be his wife. He enlisted the help of both their families, including his dad, songwriter Rhett Atkins, to help him pull off his romantic proposal. Continue Reading
