Lady A’s Hillary Scott, “Need” Awarded

Lady Antebellum photo courtesy of Capitol Nashville.

“Need You Now” lofted Lady Antebellum from a well-regarded band within country music to one that’s recognized across multiple genres, and it already won Single Record and Song of the Year during the Academy of Country Music Awards in April.

With the Country Music Association set to hand out its trophies on Wednesday, “Need You Now” claimed yet another victory Monday when it won Song of the Year from SESAC and — combined with “I Run To You” and “Our Kind Of Love” — earned group member Hillary Scott recognition as the performing-rights organization’s Songwriter of the Year in a black-tie event on Music Row.

SESAC is one of three American PROs, responsible for collecting and distributing money for songwriters, so its recognition is symbolic of just how financially rewarding the song has been.

Blake Shelton’s “Liver” And “Drunken” Martina Take to Twitter

Blake Shelton’s Twitter profile says ‘You’re getting the real BS straight from Blake himself.’ Like Blake’s, Taylor Swift’s  account is verified to prove it is really Taylor tweeting. The popularity of Twitter has made it an almost ‘must have’ for artists these days as it gives them a quick and easy way to promote their music and interact with fans. Fans in turn love the idea that they can tweet their favorite star and maybe get a reply or can follow along with them on the night of a big show through tweets and shared photos. Because of the popularity of Twitter, record labels go through great lengths to ensure fans know their artists’ Twitter accounts are the real deal.

Recently however, a crop of fake Twitter accounts have been popping up, mocking the artists that inspired them. The operator behind @blakes_liver runs with Blake’s humorous tweets about alcohol, PETA and his ‘If you don’t like George Strait…’ jokes. @DrunkenMartina is one of several @drunken Twitter accounts poking fun at country stars from Martina McBride to Laura Bell Bundy. One of the original accounts is @NotJakeOwen who goes by the name ‘Cake Bowen’ in his Twitter profile.  There is also @notkennychesney, @NotKennyRogers and a host of others. Continue Reading

Tom T. Hall Leads Good-Natured Songwriters Showcase

Country Music Hall of Fame member Tom T. Hall.

Country Music Hall of Fame member Tom T. Hall.

There’s a segment of older artists who resent the current crop of performers, who represent change for a genre that’s held in high regard by its previous crop of talent. Country Music Hall of Fame member Tom T. Hall is not one of those crabby old-guard dudes.

“Music is an art form,” he told a passel of programmers Thursday at the Country Radio Seminar. “It should not be done the way it used to be done. If we do it the way they used to do it, that’s copying.”

Not that T. is above getting crabby.

“I do resent,” he allowed, “the fact that they’re makin’ so much money!”

Jo Dee Messina Puts Christmas in Hyperdrive

Behind on your holiday shopping already? You probably won’t get much sympathy from Jo Dee Messina. Despite the fact that she spent large chunks of November away from home on tour, she’s already got the decorations up at her house — and she’s been tending to a sick husband as she enjoys her first Christmas as a mom.

If that’s not enough, she’s packing even more into the first week of December as she does the season up big-time. Jo Dee’s part of a new round of talent announced for Wednesday’s annual NBC special “Christmas In Rockefeller Center,” which puts her in the company of Rod Stewart, Rob Thomas, Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin, Michael Buble and Alicia Keys.

And topping off the week, Jo Dee’s got a pair of fundraising concerts on tap Saturday at the Brentwood United Methodist Church in Middle Tennessee. The shows are officially free, though she’s asking for donations, with all proceeds from the door — and from merchandise sales — earmarked for Harvest Hands, a community organization dedicated to an impoverished neighborhood in Nashville. She’s a firm believer in the program, particularly because its director is passionately involved 24/7.

Taylor Swift: A Star Earns Her Stripes

Taylor Swift has sold out the prestigious Madison Square Garden and performed in front of 50,000 fans at the CMA Music Festival. But neither of those shows represents her biggest audience.

She sang for a whopping 65,000 people in 2006 when she delivered “The Star-Spangled Banner” before a Pittsburgh Steelers game at Heinz Field. The home team lost that game to the Cincinnati Bengals, but it was a winning experience for Taylor, whose first video — “Tim McGraw” — had just debuted on GAC a mere two months prior.

“It was the first time I had ever been in front of that many people,” the Pennsylvania native told The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It was one of the coolest experiences of my life, because I was so happy to be back in my home state. I was traveling for a really long time, and it was really cool to feel that energy again.” Continue Reading
