Eric Church Ruffles Feathers with Rolling Stone Interview

Eric Church photo courtesy of Essential Broadcast Media. Taken by Ann-Marie Hensley

Eric Church recently gave a candid, profanity-laced interview to Rolling Stone and some of his comments have left Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton less than happy with him, reports The Boot. In the interview, Eric puts singing competitions such as The Voice, on which Blake is a coach, in his cross hairs.

“It’s become American Idol gone mad,” Eric said. “Honestly, if Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green f—ing turn around in a red chair, you get a deal? That’s crazy. I don’t know what would make an artist do that. You’re not an artist.”

Eric continued to voice his opinion on singing competitions, firmly stating he would never be a part of one. “If I was concerned about my legacy, there’s no f—ing way I would ever sit there [and be a reality-show judge],” he said. “Once your career becomes something other than the music, then that’s what it is. I’ll never make that mistake. I don’t care if I f—ing starve.”

Blake and Miranda both took to Twitter to respond to Eric’s comments. Miranda first turned heads as a contestant on Nashville Star and didn’t take long to respond. “Thanks Eric Church for saying I’m not a real artist. Or @kelly_clarkson, @carrieunderwood & @KeithUrban. Your (sic) welcome for the tour in 2010,” she tweeted.

Blake’s usually colorful tweets were a little more reserved regarding Eric’s comments. “I wish I misunderstood this,” Blake wrote, re-tweeting a link to an article containing parts of the interview. He later re-tweeted the article again, this time writing “Why? Just why?…”

Fellow artist Jimmy Wayne came to Blake’s defense, posting an open letter on his Facebook page recalling the first time he heard Blake play at a writer’s round in Nashville. Jimmy wrapped his letter by sharing his view on the current state of the music industry and calling Blake an ‘ambassador for country music.’

“Blake Shelton was asked to be on The Voice,” Jimmy wrote. “Anyone in their right mind would have taken that opportunity and would have done so at half the price. This not only generates traffic for Blake Shelton but it helps the entire country music genre. That’s our guy representing us on National TV. Our spokesperson. Our ambassador. When I look back and think of that tall skinny young man sitting behind that microphone in a round at Douglas Corner and see him now in that big red chair on The Voice helping others live their dream, it makes me proud to know him and call him a friend.”

In response to the reaction brought about by his interview, Eric has since issued a statement clarifying his statements made in Rolling Stone and apologizing to Miranda, reports The Boot. He does not mention Blake or retract his comments about singing competitions, however. Continue Reading

Carrie Underwood Discusses the Dark Side of Her New Album

Carrie Underwood photo courtesy of Sony Music Nashville.

As Carrie Underwood prepares to launch her new album, Blown Away, on Tuesday, May 1, she sat down with Billboard’s Chuck Dauphin this past Friday for a live Q&A session to talk about her new music, life on the road and answer a few fan questions. Carrie talked in depth about the darker tones that run through Blown Away, but assured fans it lightens up if they can just hang in there.

“We start off a little heavy, a little darker, a little more ominous, and definitely lighten up after that so if you listen to the album don’t be worried when you hear the first three songs, it does get happier,” she said.

Read our review of Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away »

The darker songs, including the album’s lead track and first single, “Good Girl,” are part of Carrie experimenting with new sounds and themes on her latest project. “I feel like we took things in a lot of different directions, things that are new for me, that darker, heavier tone, a little more dramatic,” she said. “We also do some songs that are really really organic and sweet, Just groovy songs. The only plugged in instrument on a couple of them is the bass guitar. And then we get a little redneck in the end.” Continue Reading

Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley Among Country Stars ‘Hockeytonking’ in Nashville

Carrie Underwood photo courtesy of Sony Music Nashville.

The Nashville Predators have made it to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and they have some famous fans backing them, reports the Associated Press. Vince Gill can be found by the rink, taunting opposing players. Hockey fan Dierks Bentley attends games regularly and plans to be at second round games against the Phoenix Coyotes in both Phoenix and Nashville.

Martina McBride and Wynonna Judd join the house band during intermissions and Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman were spotted wearing the free t-shirts given out to fans as they cheered the Preds on to their series-ending victory over Detroit last week. Reba can often be found watching the game and Carrie Underwood may be the biggest fan of all – she’s married to Preds center Mike Fisher.

In Nashville, they call this ‘hockeytonking.’ “We’ve got a really good thing going,” Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. “Anyone who’s come and seen us play in Nashville in the playoffs, or even during the regular season for that matter, get blown away by what Nashville has to offer, what pro sports have to offer and what the Predators have to offer.”

Mike Fisher agrees. “Guys love coming to Nashville,” he said. “It’s something different. There’s no other city like it as far as music, the Honky Tonks, and we stay right downtown and the weather’s usually great, a lot of people. Guys usually circle the Nashville trip on the schedule when they come to town, and the atmosphere just keeps getting better and better, and it’s fun.”

Mike’s biggest fan, wife Carrie Underwood, will likely miss most of the Predators second round action. Her new album, Blown Away, hits stores May 1 and she’s busy with promotional obligations. “She doesn’t like it when she misses it, but now obviously it’s crunch time for her,” Mike said. “It’s kind of her playoffs now with the album release. She’s excited about that and has a lot of work to do.”

But Carrie will be rink-side cheering her husband and his teammates on, should they make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. “I would start canceling stuff,” she said. “I’m not going to lie. I do not cancel things ever. We are always good about making plans, keeping plans and I don’t mind working so, but I would cancel things for the Stanley Cup.” Continue Reading
