GAC Album Review: Dierks Bentley’s Home

Dierks Bentley

On his last record, 2010’s Up On The Ridge, Dierks Bentley went Appalachian while pursuing his love for bluegrass, amidst earthy tones and Americana-influenced songs. Though the album was critically acclaimed and garnered Country Album of the Year nominations from both the Grammys and CMA, the singles didn’t achieve quite the same success at radio as his previous releases. On Home, his first mainstream set since 2009’s Feel That Fire, Dierks returns with 12 contemporary songs that showcase the singer/songwriter firmly entrenched in his element and building on established strengths.

With the album’s first single, “Am I The Only One,” already reaching the top spot on the country charts, and follow-up single “Home” currently in the Top 10, it’s clear the new work is already connecting. These two songs also highlight the diversity of Dierks’ songwriting and continued artistic drive. “Am I The Only One” is a rowdy stomp through a wild night that has Dierks seeking out someone to party with, while “Home” is an introspective and vast power ballad celebrating our differences with elegant patriotism. Dierks’ ability to maneuver between lighthearted and openly emotional from song-to-song has been a key aspect to his career — and he continues to execute it flawlessly here.

Songs like the quick “5-1-5-0,” punctuated by sharp acoustic riffing and tight banjo, illustrate Dierks’ sense of humor and penchant for entertaining twists. 5-1-5-0, just this side of loco/ I’m goin’ crazy / Think I love you, baby, he sings through lyrical dips and dives. On the hard-driving “In My Head,” distorted guitars roll along while Dierks shows off his ability to develop engaging melodies over an entire song. Flowing through verse and chorus, melodies build to a powerful refrain complete with rhymes inside rhymes. You’re still in that t-shirt on my bed/ You’re every song that’s on, you’re gone, but you’re in my arms in my head, he sings with an emotional punch.

On the swaying “Tip It On Back,” Dierks cleverly alters the carefree nature found in other songs on the album with a desire for being free from troubles when faced with tough struggles. With epic-sounding production supplied by Brett Beavers and Luke Wooten, ringing guitars and twinkling mandolin lay a foundation for forgetting about Main Street closing and miles of “for sale” signs with a good old-fashioned night at the bar. It’s a smart emotional swap that gives the song extra depth.

Home features guest spots from bluegrass players Sam Bush and Tim O’Brien on “Heart of a Lonely Girl,” and Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild adds beautiful dynamics to the bluesy “When You Gonna Come Around.” However, it’s Dierks’ three-year old daughter Evie who provides the most touching collaboration, singing the final chorus of “Thinking Of You” and creating the album’s most tender moment. On Home, Dierks masterfully pulls these different elements together, creating an album that succeeds in both its artistic vision as well as its mainstream appeal.

Key Tracks – “When You Gonna Come Around,” “Home,” “In My Head,” “Diamonds Make Babies”

Dierks Bentley has shared new details about his upcoming new album, Home, which hits stores February 7. This will be Dierks’ first mainstream country album since 2009’s Feel That Fire. He released the experimental bluegrass and GRAMMY nominated Up On The Ridgein 2010.

“I definitely stepped away and explored some things that were more on the fringe of country music for a little while,” Dierks said. “So, this record feels fresh. It doesn’t feel like a continuation of any other project or series of recordings.  I love being able to try different things musically, and I’m so thankful my fans have followed me to those places.  But, I feel like my real ‘Home’ is in the center of country music.”

Home will include the No. 1 hit “Am I The Only One” as well as his current single, “Home,” both co-written by Dierks. He’s also credited as a writer on “Breathe You In” and “Thinking of You.” Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild lends her vocals on “When You Gonna Come Around” and legendary bluegrass players Sam Bush and Tim O’Brien team up with Dierks on “Heart of a Lonely Girl.” Fans should listen closely to the album to find the recording’s hidden special guest. Country Stars Recall Favorite Christmas Presents

Country stars revealed the best Christmas presents they’ve ever received on the red carpet of the CMA Awards and it sounds like pets were a popular gift choice! Guitars, toys and even baby sisters were also listed by country stars as memorable gifts from their childhood.

“I got a miniature dachshund when I was in the third grade,” Brantley Gilbert shared. “That was my buddy all the way up through high school.”

The Band Perry also received a pet one memorable Christmas, but it was slightly bigger than Brantley’s miniature dog. “I remember one year we got, the three of us, a carriage and a horse to pull it,” Kimberly Perry recalled. “We were so excited.”

For Lauren Alaina, her favorite gift was a set of wheels. “My little Barbie bike when I was like three,” she said. “I had a fit. I have the cutest little picture. I thought I owned the world that day so it’d probably be the Barbie bike.”

Several artists mentioned receiving their first guitars for Christmas, including Chris Young. “When I was a little kid, not a real little kid, but I got my first guitar,” Chris said. “That’s probably been more important than any other gifts I’ve gotten so far.” Continue Reading

Little Big Town has released their new video for “Shut Up Train.” Directed by Becky Fluke, the black and white, vintage-inspired video was shot at Nashville’s Rocketown and the historic Union Station Hotel. The emotionally-charged song is a fan favorite and the band wanted to bring those emotions to life with their video.

“We really believe in this song and wanted to give it a visual so that it would have a chance to be seen and heard,” said Kimberly Schlapman. Continue Reading

Kix Brooks, CMA Donate $2.9 Million to Nashville

High-school sophomore Duncan McPherson had a tough gig on Wednesday. He played an intricate Spanish guitar piece with TV cameras rolling before an exclusive Nashville audience that included the mayor of his hometown and three country artists — Kix Brooks, Luke Bryan and Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild — all watching from the front row.

Despite the pressure, Duncan played the piece quite nicely, demonstrating the volume of creative potential in the current class of students, if they’re simply given a chance.

“I don’t think any of those chords are in ‘Red Dirt Road,’” Kix quipped.

Little Big Town, Randy Rogers Banded Together at Nos. 1 & 2

To purposely misquote a Paul McCartney classic, bands are on the run in country music — straight to the top of the charts.

Little Big Town’s new album The Reason Why, bolts out of the chute to No. 1 on this week’s Billboard Country Albums chart, and it’s followed by the Randy Rogers Band’s Burning The Day, checking in at No. 2. In fact, groups occupy four of the Top 5 slots on the chart. Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now checks in at No. 4, and the the Zac Brown Band hanging in at No. 5 with the double-platinum project The Foundation. The only thing blocking bands from a Top 5 sweep is the Trace Adkins album Cowboy’s Back In Town.

Most fans probably don’t think much about it, but being in a band is completely different from working as a solo artist. There are more expenses, more opinions and more egos involved, so decisions require more communication and more time. As a reward for all that extra work, there’s less potential income — the band members have to split up the proceeds in the end.

When fans look back on the 2010 CMA Music Festival, one of the sonic moments they’re likely to remember collectively will be the close of Keith Urban’s Friday-night set at Nashville’s LP Field, where he put together an all-star ensemble for a Beatles cover.

Keith brought out a horn section led by Kenny Chesney sideman Jim Horn, keyboard players Tony Brown and Tim Akers and a group of background vocalists that included Sarah Buxton and Little Big Town members Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman for a version of “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Footage of last month’s Tennessee flood — and of neighbors helping each other through it — ran across the video screen in the back, underscoring the song’s communal theme.

Watch it here:

Keith did the song twice for a film crew that was taping the stadium shows for the Sept. 1 ABC special “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night To Rock.” Nashville’s recovery from the disaster is likely to be an undercurrent in the special, in part because it’s an example of a city that pulled together to help itself.
